Yes, it’s good to be a Lake Travis-ite this summer. Lake Travis is open for business, which makes for exciting summer days and breezy evenings gazing at a beautiful Texas sunset.

As of May 28, 2019, LCRA reported Lake Travis and Lake Buchanan are 97% full. This time last year, we were hovering at 84% full. There’s also more rain on the way for the Texas Hill Country, so we’re going to be happy and full for a while.

Smokey Bear nailed it back in 1947 with “Remember…Only YOU Can Prevent Forest Fires.” And again in 2001, when his slogan changed to “Only YOU Can Prevent Wildfires.” The reality is, out here in the Lake Travis area, it is up to us to prevent wildfires.

You’ve seen the horrifying footage of the California fires – surreal and beyond devastating. The thought of fires like that sweeping through our slice of the Texas Hill Country is just too scary.

For many of the lake and Hill Country communities, there’s one way in and one way out. As we discovered during the fires in Steiner Ranch in September 2011, being vulnerable is terrifying. Evacuation plans are critical for everyone’s safety.

As a result, initiatives have been implemented locally, and more are in the works. Here’s a look at what you need to know and more importantly, what you can do about it.

Ode to Moms: ‘Twas Days Before Christmas in Lake Travis

‘Twas days before Christmas, when all through the formerly organized house,
every child was stirring, hopefully without louse — yes, tea tree oil works.
SUVs were swerving in the Target parking lot without care,
in hopes the discounted Nintendo Switch still would be there.

Shoppers were frantic, in need of anti-anxiety meds,
while visions of Happy Hour cocktails danced in their heads.
And Mama in her Lululemon with her rose gold yoga mat,
got stuck in line at JuiceLand, so she scrolled Insta and sat.

Mama took a moment to check her holiday card list,
fearing there was a friend she might’ve missed.
