Every neighborhood has its certain flair or personality, especially Lake Travis area community, Hudson Bend.

Settled in the early 1850s by Wiley Hudson and his family from Arkansas, the area was initially used for farming and agriculture. This was up until the 1940s when Marshall Ford Dam was built, now Mansfield Dam. Close to half of Hudson Bend’s land was flooded when Lake Travis was created, and the area slowly changed from agricultural to residential. The faces of Hudson Bend were changing.

Now over 2,300 people call it home, from retirees to Austin commuters. It’s got it’s special kind of style, with houses of all styles and many different types of businesses have made their headquarters here. If you’ve been around one of the many marinas on Hudson Bend on the weekend or if you’ve been to the area for dinner, maybe you’ve experienced it yourself.

Whether you’re on a mission to find the best place to launch your boat or want a great place to stop and enjoy near Lake Travis, Hudson Bend has what you need. Catch a sunset and a round of mini golf or two, or just grab a beer at nearby Infamous Brewing Company to get an idea of that Hudson Bend spirit. Before you know it, you’ll be feeling like a local.

You may have already heard the news around Hudson Bend, but there are some big changes going on around these parts.

With so much expansion happening in the Lake Travis area, several neighborhoods are experiencing growing pains that come along with it. As more and more businesses seek to call the area home, people and families come with them from all parts of Texas and the country.

Everyone has their idea of what life in Lake Travis should be like, and how it should continue for years to come. It would be a mistake to let go of the unique and cherished Texas history that permeates the area — that is why it’s so important to protect the special essence that thrives out here on the lake.

So many passionate Texans live out on the Bend, as they call it around here, and it’s no wonder that discussions get heated when questions arise about the future of the coveted cove.

Lake Travis Community Library Presents Author Carole Sikes: Hudson Bend and the Birth of Lake Travis

We enjoy sharing with you a little bit about the history of the Lake Travis area here at LTL.

And if you’re familiar with the areas along Hudson Bend, nearby Steiner Ranch or Lakeway you might already know a bit about the foundation of the settling of our cherished land. Wiley Hudson was the first to purchase several plots here along the lush and abundant banks of the fertile Colorado River.

Then came the New Deal era and with it, Mansfield Dam.

Our beautiful Lake Travis was once a dream of Congressmen, construction workers and settlers, but after the building of the dam the lake became a veritable reality.

The harnessing of hydroelectric power would be able to bring electricity to the area, and with it, economic development. Without it we probably would not be here today.
