From the Vineyard to the Glass at Flat Creek Estate in Marble Falls

Written by Sandra Spicher | November 24, 2015

Entrance to Flat Creek Estate

In the middle of 2011’s grape harvest, Flat Creek Estate lost its winemaker to a rival in California. Desperate to save the vintage, owners Rick and Madelyn Naber asked Tim Drake, then an itinerant wine scientist running Texas Wine Lab, for help. Drake turned out to be a winemaker in search of a winery.

Since then, the wines produced at Flat Creek — and the vineyard where estate grapes are grown — have been under Drake’s purview.

The Nabers’ goal had always been to make world-class wines. Once they settled on wine as the product, anyway. They bought what was known as Flat Creek Farm on East Singleton Bend Road to save the agricultural land from development in 1999.

ThunderCloud Subs: The Journey to Sandwich Fame

Written by Tiffini Brock | November 19, 2015

We are lucky to live in a place that has so many sandwich options, because sandwiches are pretty great.

However, not many places can claim to have served multiple generations a tuna salad on white.

ThunderCloud Subs is an iconic sandwich shop with three locations in the Lake Travis area at Four Points, Lakeway, and Bee Cave. They are celebrating two big milestones this year — 40 years of making sandwiches and 25 years of Turkey Trot’s. The Turkey Trot is an Austin Thanksgiving Day tradition that has raised over $2.5 million to help support Caritas of Austin.

We caught up with Mike Haggerty, co-owner of ThunderCloud Subs and run director of the ThunderCloud Subs Turkey Trot, and asked him a few questions about the journey to sandwich fame.

Written by Mandy Spivey | November 2, 2015

Swift Distillery

Passion is one of the main components in a successful business. That’s why it’s so fun to be able to come across passionate people who have been able to take their dream to the next level, the physical step of starting a business doing what one loves.

Central Texas and the Hill Country is having a boom and distilleries are growing, too. It seems that every time you turn around there’s a new spirit being made in our very backyard, many in neighboring Dripping Springs and Southwest Austin.

Husband and wife distillers Nick and Amanda Swift are owners of Swift Distillery and are fresh on the scene to offer their very own Single Malt Texas Whiskey.
