Kid Friendly Restaurants in the Lake Travis Area

Written by Todd Hower | May 12, 2016

Angel's Icehouse

Does dinner time at your house look something like this? Kids running amok, eating mac and cheese with their fingers, knocking over milk, with lots of screaming and shouting.

Do you wake up delusional some days, ready to risk eating out with your kids to get a break from cooking and dirty dishes, thinking the kids will keep it together for your well-deserved break … not hardly.

You can have the best of both worlds where dinner is served, dishes are done, and you can let your kids do what they are best at — being kids. Your search for the best kid friendly restaurants in the Lake Travis area ends here.

We put together a list of the ones with good, reasonably priced food for kids (and adults) and a playscape or play area that makes it easy to keep an eye on them while you’re enjoying your meal.

Hopefully, you’ll find that moment of peace and the ability to carry on a conversation with your significant other or friends.

Here are LTL’s kid friendly restaurants in the Lake Travis area (in no particular order):

Hill Country Galleria Wine Walk: Free Wine Tasting Every Month

Written by Todd Hower | April 14, 2016

HCG Wine Walk Mark your calendar and grab a group of friends for a fun night of wine tasting during the Hill Country Galleria Wine Walk. For a date night, girls night out, or just a fun way to expand your wine repertoire, you can’t beat this Thursday night offering.

This evening of wine tasting begins at your first stop, the Twin Liquors located near Dick’s Sporting Good (map).

While there, you’ll be given your first taste of wine … and a map. The map will be your guide (and ticket) as you make your way throughout the Hill Country Galleria to stop at participating businesses and taste wine from all over the world.

It’s the perfect opportunity to test your skills at drinking wine and navigating a shopping center.

Along with the free wine tasting, you will also receive a Hill Country Galleria shopping bag filled with exclusive offers. Choose your route and enjoy this event (and drinks) at your own pace — those little samples of wine can add up quick.

This fun and free event happens on the second Thursday of every month from 5pm-9pm. Feel free to arrive later for this casual night of strolling and sampling. Reservations are not required, but you must be 21 years of age or older.

Are you saying it right?

Here’s a quick pronunciation guide to the 5 most popular wines and a link to more wine-related terms:

Pinot Grigio (Pee-noe Gree-joe)

Sauvignon Blanc (So-veen-yawn BlahN)

Pinot Noir (Pee-noe Nwahr)

Chardonnay (Shar-doe-nay)

Cabernet Sauvignon (Cab-air-nay So-veen-yawN)

Check out how to taste wine like an expert and look like a sommelier (so-mel-yay) on your next Hill Country Galleria Wine Walk.

Lake Travis Gets Drained by a Fish

Rumors started circulating early Thursday morning that a rare fish had been caught near the low water crossing on Lake Austin.

The fish in question is the once thought to be extinct yellow-bellied sucker fish. A relative to the threatened blue sucker fish, but not to be confused with the yellow-bellied sapsucker.

Long before Mansfield Dam had been constructed, the yellow-bellied sucker thrived in the swift waters of the Colorado River.

The yellow-bellied sucker needs cooler water temperatures and a steady current to spawn and survive. So it was shortly after the completion of Mansfield Dam in 1942 that sightings of the fish were rare. By 1944, it was believed that the yellow-bellied sucker fish had gone extinct.

That was until early this morning.
