i love you so much

Valentine’s Day is around the corner, so if you haven’t taken the opportunity to snap a picture by the “i love you so much” wall at Jo’s Hot Coffee on South Congress now is as good a time as any.

You’ve probably seen plenty of photos taken in front of the now iconic graffiti message. Couples, siblings, best friends, pregnant women, family generations, owners with their pets – people of all types are drawn to the simple yet sweet message. But do you know the story behind it?

Thoughtful Gifts and Ideas to Make Moving Easier

Written by Emily O'Shaughnessy | February 7, 2014

Moving boxes

Moving. It can be an exciting and hopeful time, but it’s also one full of stress and a heck of a lot of work. Even if you’re just moving across the neighborhood you still have to wrap, pack, load, unload, organize, clean, deal with address changes and so on. If you’re moving to a new city it’s even harder. Besides leaving an established support system, you have to deal with the joys of navigating a new city — finding a grocery store, doctor, dentist, gym, preschool, hairdresser, etc.

Thrift Shopping in the Lake Travis Area

Thrift Stores in Lake Travis

Ok, I’ll admit it.  I’m a sucker for thrift stores. Given the choice of shopping at the mall or sifting through racks of vintage clothing I’ll take the old stuff any day. Now I realize they’re not for everyone—but I also know I’m in good company. Secondhand stores are widely popular these days and people of all ages, demographics and income levels proudly frequent them in search of hidden treasures.

There used to be a sort of stigma attached to thrift stores, but thankfully any negative label is long gone. Somewhere along the lines it became cool to shop secondhand.  And that’s a good thing.

Austin Snow Day 2: Snowpocalypse 2014 Continues

Written by Emily O'Shaughnessy | January 28, 2014

Snowpocalypse 2014

Poor Mother Nature. She is seriously confused. “Is it winter or summer? Do I sprinkle with snow or break out the sun?”  She can’t seem to make up her mind. Or maybe she just likes playing with our heads. Either way, it’s working.

We’ve swung from lows in the 20s to highs in the 70s and back again all in a few shorts days. Even with our unpredictable Texas weather this has been an absurdly crazy week. Lake Travis area schools and businesses across the region shut down Friday. Kids used cardboard boxes as makeshift sleds and scraped together enough ice to build teeny tiny snowmen.

Lake Travis Area Excursion: Austin Zoo and Animal Sanctuary

Written by Emily O'Shaughnessy | January 24, 2014

Deer at the Austin Zoo

The Austin Zoo and Animal Sanctuary is unique and different than other zoos—in a good way. Of course they have most of the animals you’d expect to see at a zoo—monkeys, bears, big cats, reptiles, birds and more. But the Austin Zoo is more than just a place to view animals. It’s a non-profit dedicated to assisting animals through rescue, rehabilitation and education. Many of the animals come from bad situations, and the zoo provides them a healthy, happy forever home. The animals are well-loved and cared for and it shows.
