The Musicians Woodshed: A Store and School that Rocks Lake Travis

Written by Cathy Hale | July 9, 2014

“If you can count to four, you can play the drums,” laughed Tony Walsh when he saw my six-year-old’s eyes light up, enamored with the shiny drum set.

Walsh, one of the owners of The Musicians Woodshed asked, “Have you ever played the drums?” “No? Well, give it a go!” My son hopped on the seat and Walsh started teaching him the basics. Ten minutes later, my son was grinning from ear-to-ear, happily chanting “1-2-3-4…” and playing the drums. Rock on.

We had stopped by the Woodshed for an impromptu visit and immediately understood why it has such a stellar reputation. The Musicians Woodshed, located at 3698 Ranch Road 620 South, is more than a music store — it’s an experience. They offer something for everyone, whether you’re a seasoned rocker or a classical pianist. The atmosphere is laid-back, fun, funky and very friendly.

How Lake Travis is Keeping Austin Weird

Written by Cathy Hale | June 24, 2014

Yes, Austin loves its weirdos. And you don’t have to live in downtown Austin to embrace your inner weird. From Westlake to Lakeway to Steiner Ranch, we’re doing our part to keep our favorite tagline alive and well in the burbs too.

First of all, we should give credit where credit is due. In 2000, the Austin Independent Business Alliance adopted the “Keep Austin Weird” slogan in an effort to promote small businesses. Those three little words stuck like glue and we started seeing the famous bumper stickers. In fact, the slogan was so widely admired, many other cities started adopting it as their slogan too — like Portland. (Of course they did.)

So why are we happy about being weird? Well, the message is a positive one celebrating Austin for having an accepting culture where artistic expression thrives and we embrace progressive growth politically, socially and in culture — especially music. And we love and support our local businesses. This spirit is what keeps our city (and our suburbs) vibrant and eclectic.
