5 Things You Should Know About Cold & Flu Season

Written by Cathy Hale | October 21, 2015

It’s that time of year again in Lake Travis when even the healthiest kiddos (and parents) get sidelined by cold and flu season. In fact, the flu is already in Texas. Can I hear a unanimous “ugh?” UGH.

That’s why we’re chatting with Lake Travis pediatrician Dr. Danielle Grant of Beansprout Pediatrics to get her advice about the best ways to keep our kiddos healthy. She’s a mom of three youngsters herself, so she totally understands how one child with a cold can bring an entire household to a screeching halt. And that’s not fun for anyone!

From flu shots to Tamiflu to the cedar fever misnomer, here are 5 things you should know about cold and flu season:

Rocks Premium Mixers: A Leap of Faith from Sand to Shelves

Written by Cathy Hale | October 7, 2015

An idea born on the sandy beaches of Tahiti has made its way into stores statewide and soon, nationwide. Lake Travis residents and business owners, Steve and Dawn Langerock, founders of Rocks Premium Mixers have an interesting story to share. A story that is most often told over a refreshing Mai Tai.

The software CEO and business consultant turned mixologists were enjoying a relaxing Tahitian vacation about 12 years ago, when they discovered their new favorite drink, a perfect blend of tropical fruit juices and dark rum. When they returned home, they searched everywhere for it — they even tried to locate the beachcomber in Tahiti — but no luck.

So what do two resourceful professionals think? Let’s make it ourselves!

And that’s exactly what they did.

The Grocery Store Debate in Lake Travis: H-E-B, Randalls or Whole Foods?

Written by Cathy Hale | September 30, 2015

Shopping for groceries. Love it or hate it?

Are you a prepared shopper with a grocery list, an expandable coupon organizer and a bevy of reusable totes?

Or are you the frantic shopper who runs in with good intentions and then your eyes glaze over with defeat somewhere in the frozen waffle aisle?

Whatever kind of shopper you are, we all have something in common — we need food — and most of us have preferences when it comes to choosing the place to shop for our groceries.

It’s the great grocery store debate in Lake Travis:

Where do you like to shop for groceries in Lake Travis?

Which grocery store do you shop at most of the time?

I find it interesting that many residents in the Lake Travis area have a definite preference of where they ideally like to shop, but that’s not always where they go. Why? Two answers stand out — convenience and parking (or the lack thereof).

Lake Travis Neighborhood Guide: Lakeway

Written by Cathy Hale | September 29, 2015

When it comes to the hottest neighborhoods in Austin, Lakeway has consistently snagged the title of MVP on the roster of best places to live in the Texas Hill Country.

The lush rolling hills, picturesque views, native wildlife and, of course, access to Lake Travis are just a few of its selling points. Even if you live in the Austin area, you might not fully understand why folks love to live here.

Is it because there’s a water tower that looks like a golf ball?

Is it because there’s a community pool shaped like a tennis racket with a kiddie pool shaped like a tennis ball?

Is it because Lakeway is playfully described as, “Dazed and Confused meets Ivy League.”

What was once known as a quiet vacation and retirement community has been transformed into a hub of growth and development — which makes living here convenient to everything.

Honk if You Love Traffic: Your Lake Travis Transportation Snapshot

Written by Cathy Hale | September 28, 2015

As residents and business owners in the Lake Travis area, we all get caught up in the excitement of what’s next on the “new in Lake Travis” list. Most of us are genuinely excited to see Oaks at Lakeway, more preschool options, new local shops and, of course, new restaurants.

But with all of the excitement in the air, the traffic concerns are becoming more substantial. Let’s face it, growth will happen. It’s inevitable. We can’t change that. We’ll probably see more storage facilities, car dealerships and other types of things along RR 620 and Highway 71 that some of you will consider to be … well, er … less appealing.

On the flip side, most of us who live in the Lake Travis area love it here! While we may complain about the traffic, we want to stay. This is where we moved to raise our children, take advantage of some of the best schools in Austin, enjoy life in the Texas Hill Country and own a slice of serenity in this often overwhelming, over-connected life.

Enter Texas Department of Transportation findings.

This is where the rubber meets the road. No pun intended.
