Lake Travis Area Excursion: Austin Zoo and Animal Sanctuary

Written by Emily O'Shaughnessy | January 24, 2014

Deer at the Austin Zoo

The Austin Zoo and Animal Sanctuary is unique and different than other zoos—in a good way. Of course they have most of the animals you’d expect to see at a zoo—monkeys, bears, big cats, reptiles, birds and more. But the Austin Zoo is more than just a place to view animals. It’s a non-profit dedicated to assisting animals through rescue, rehabilitation and education. Many of the animals come from bad situations, and the zoo provides them a healthy, happy forever home. The animals are well-loved and cared for and it shows.

Lake Travis’ Newest Tap Room at Infamous Brewing Company

Written by Mandy Spivey | January 23, 2014

There are big things brewing on Hudson Bend. Our friends at Infamous Brewing Company have been working since the first of the year to open their first tap room, complete with a 6-tap bar, seasonal brews and hang out zone.

Since legislation was passed by Rick Perry last June giving permission for breweries to sell beer directly to their customers to consume on site, IBC was interested in securing a space for their very own tap room.

Midway Food Park: Trailer Food Heaven

Midway Food Park

Any other families have those days where no one can agree where to eat? One person wants seafood, another loves BBQ, someone else craves Tex-Mex and the last doesn’t care as long as there’s a place for the kids to run around and burn some energy. Sound familiar? If only there were a place that could please everyone….

Amazingly, such a place actually exists (and nope, I’m not talking about the mall food court)! Midway Food Park is trailer food heaven, just a short drive from the Lake Travis area. The park opened last fall on Highway 360, about a mile south of Bee Cave Road. It currently consists of eight food trailers in a large fenced in area, with ample outdoor seating, a playground for the kids and clean, air-conditioned bathrooms (this may not sound like such a big deal in January, but wait ‘til July rolls around…).

Running Free: Lake Travis Area Dog Parks

Written by Mandy Spivey | January 21, 2014

Lake Travis Area Dog Parks

Sometimes you just need to get your dog out of the house, out of the yard, and give him the space to run and get social with other pooches. If you live in an apartment or condominium without a yard, you’ll likely find that Lake Travis area dog parks will become regular destinations for both you and your furry friend.

Our dog Moses has been to many dog parks in Austin and around the Lake Travis area, so I think he is a pretty good judge of which ones are winners. We are lucky to live close by a couple of his favorites — the dog parks in Lakeway and Bee Cave.

What's In A Name? Street Names in the Lake Travis Area

Written by Cathy Hale | January 20, 2014

Sledge Dr. in Lakeway

Living in the Lake Travis area, you’ve come to expect street names that reflect the easy vibe of lake life surrounded by some of the most exquisite golf courses in the nation. But once in a while, have you heard a street name and giggled? Or asked someone to repeat it because you thought maybe you misheard it?

From Falconhead to Steiner Ranch and all of the neighborhoods in between, there are plenty of memorable street names in the Lake Travis area. None of them may be as humorous as Easy Street located in Westlake, but LT residents have some goodies they call home. And while we may not be able to rock down to Electric Avenue, we do have Electra Street.

Sometimes the pure simplicity of a street name is what makes it clever. Have you ever wondered whose family tree inspired Dave Drive, Barrie Lane, Joseph Drive, Holly Lane, Sophie Drive, Dorothy Drive or John Simpson Trail?
