“If you can count to four, you can play the drums,” laughed Tony Walsh when he saw my six-year-old’s eyes light up, enamored with the shiny drum set.
Walsh, one of the owners of The Musicians Woodshed asked, “Have you ever played the drums?” “No? Well, give it a go!” My son hopped on the seat and Walsh started teaching him the basics. Ten minutes later, my son was grinning from ear-to-ear, happily chanting “1-2-3-4…” and playing the drums. Rock on.
We had stopped by the Woodshed for an impromptu visit and immediately understood why it has such a stellar reputation. The Musicians Woodshed, located at 3698 Ranch Road 620 South, is more than a music store — it’s an experience. They offer something for everyone, whether you’re a seasoned rocker or a classical pianist. The atmosphere is laid-back, fun, funky and very friendly.
Lake Travis has fully embraced The Musicians Woodshed, which recently expanded to include a new wing with more space for offices, recording studios, vocal lessons and a multipurpose room. The more the Woodshed grows, the more they can offer their students and the community. It’s definitely a win-win for our lakeside slice of the Music Capital of the World.
No matter what kind of instrument you play or aspire to play, you can learn it here. The Woodshed offers individual lessons in the following: acoustic/electric/classical guitar, bass guitar, piano, voice, drums, mandolin, banjo, ukulele, brass (trumpet, trombone, tuba, French horn and euphonium), woodwinds (flute, clarinet and saxophone) and strings (violin, viola, cello and upright bass).
In addition to lessons, the Woodshed has professional private recording studios that can accommodate singers and bands of all sizes. If you need the assistance of an in-house musician for your recording, they have those too. Many local artists have recorded at The Musicians Woodshed like Ryan Holley, Sammie Zonana, and Kaycie Satterfield. You can check out their audio clips on the website.
One of the coolest things about the Woodshed is the awesome amphitheater out back. You would never know it looking at the space from the road, but the vast backyard is fully equipped for live music with stage, sound and plenty of room for music lovers, so students get to fully experience the thrill of performing.
Another neat thing about the Woodshed is the “Garage Band” class. This unique experience helps students understand what it’s like to be in band and work as a team. These bands get to perform gigs at The Musicians Woodshed and possibly off-site gigs when they’re ready.
On the retail side of things, The Musicians Woodshed has one of the largest selections of Fender guitars in the Austin area. They carry Guild, Getsch (drums only), Luna, LAG, and Squier guitars for sale — acoustic, electric, and basses. They sell high-end used gear and some consigned gear to give everyone the chance to find their dream guitar or their dream drums, amps, accessories and more.
The best way to experience the Woodshed is to stop by for a visit. Summer camps are in full swing (and will run through early August), so chances are you’ll get to witness some musical fun for yourself.
