What’s your favorite sandwich?
I like to think a person’s choice of sandwich says something about themselves.
Some sandwiches are serious and some are light, but whatever your favorite toppings or choice of bread — the sandwich is undeniably one of lunch’s best food offerings.
In the Lake Travis area, there have been a dearth of delis and sandwich shops to experience, so when I found out about Noble Sandwich Co., just up the road off Ranch Road 620, I had to see what all of the hype was about.
Venturing to the new location (in the space formerly occupied by Vivo) right away you get a feel for the eatery. This is a restaurant that has die-hard fans since its opening back in 2010 at the small space that was next to the Exxon gas station. And I was about to experience some of the best sandwiches in the Lake Travis area.
It was a difficult decision between several bites on the menu. Not only does their stock boast flavors such as duck pate, roast beef, pork belly and beef tongue, but they had turkey, pimento cheese and handmade artisan pickles to boot.
The sandwiches speak for themselves. I’m a huge fan of locally-sourced ingredients, artisan breads — you name it. These sandwiches combine the best of all of these worlds to create the savory seasonings that make these meals so scrumptious.
Try the Knuckle Sandwich — a spicy stack of roast beef, horseradish, onions and cheddar.
And I didn’t know this, but Noble Sandwich Co. is also well-liked because of their hearty breakfasts (served till noon) featuring biscuits and gravy, eggs, spicy ham, blueberry pancakes and more. This place would be a lovely late breakfast or brunch spot if morning food piques your interests.
Chefs and owners John Bates and Brandon Martinez are united in their passion for made-from-scratch deli fare, and bring the best of these flavors to the Lake Travis area. The duo met while still in culinary school in Corpus Cristi and have been proving themselves in the world of food ever since.
John Bates has a background as Executive Chef at Asti in Hyde Park for 2 1/2 years, while Brandon’s culinary past is as colorful as their Thai Chicken Sandwich. Their love for food shines through in every bite; it’s clear that something is working at this growing charcuterie.
After Vivo closed its doors, the owners had an opportunity to make the move and occupy this larger space just a few blocks down the road from the original location. In late 2013, the doors opened with more seating and plenty of parking for the loyal fans and first-timers grabbing a bite to eat at the Noble Sandwich Co.
After several years of success at their Lake Travis location, the plans for a second location came together and the store off Burnet Rd. in Central Austin opened up in early 2014.
This is one of The 21 Best Sandwich Shops in America, and it started right here in the Lake Travis area. It’s kind of cool to think about the Noble Sandwich Co. opening up way out here in the ‘burbs first, and then expanding to a location in Central Austin — it’s usually the other way around!
