Get ready to putt for a cause on Saturday, October 4 at the first annual “Poodie Party” in honor of James Randall Locke, affectionately known as ‘Poodie’ of Poodies Hilltop Roadhouse.
This golf tournament and benefit will be held at the Pedernales Golf Club — also known as Willie Nelson’s Cut N Putt. You can plan on a full day of fun along with silent auction items, raffle prizes, delicious food and live music performances by The Tejas Brothers, Waylon Payne, Bobby Boyd, Bad Rodeo, Jimmie Lee Jones, Ru Payne Coleman and the fabulous Troubadillos. Plus, all of the fun will benefit HAMM (Health Alliance for Austin Musicians) and the Cut N Putt golf course.
If you’re not familiar with Poodie and his Hilltop Roadhouse, it’s one of Austin’s legendary honky-tonks located in Spicewood, TX. Over the years, the Hilltop has hosted music legends like Willie Nelson, Ray Wylie Hubbard, Freddy Powers, Ray Benson and Asleep at the Wheel, Jerry Jeff Walker, Billy Joe Shaver, Toby Keith, Kevin Fowler, Pat Green, Cross Canadian Ragweed, Billy Bob Thornton and more.
Poodie started in the music business in 1973 working for B. W. Stevenson and in November 1975, Poodie started working with Willie Nelson. He eventually became his stage manager and traveled the world with Willie for 34 years, making many lifelong friends along the way. Poodie shared his passion for music and helped many successful recording artists launch their careers by inviting them to perform on his Hilltop stage under the Texas flag. In fact, he showcased some of the best musicians not only from Texas, but also from all over the country.
Poodie passed away suddenly on May 6, 2009. Even though his funeral was held in one of the biggest churches in Waco, it was standing room only. His friends came from all over the world to bid him farewell. What better way to remember his memory than to hold a party and benefit for his birthday (October 3) at one of his favorite places, Willie’s Cut N Putt.
After the golf outing ends, the festivities continue at Poodies Hilltop Roadhouse (where a life-size wooden statue of Poodie will oversee the fun) featuring a “Troubadillo Reunion” with The Troubadillos, Louie Long, BB Morse, Pete Mitchell, Dean Rimmer, Ron Erwin and Action Jackson, the same musicians who were the house band at Poodies for over 10 years.
