LTL Weekly & This Weekend in Lake Travis: November 9-11, 2018

Written by Todd Hower | November 8, 2018

When you close your gates …

You re-open at 101% full. On Wednesday, LCRA closed the last floodgate at Mansfield Dam and re-opened Lake Travis for recreation. Lakes Buchanan, Inks and Travis are now open. Lakes LBJ and Marble Falls will remain closed until at least Friday, November 9, because of debris and unsafe conditions caused by the recent flooding.

When you vote …

It matters. The race for two open “at large” seats on the Lakeway City Council was a close one. Candidate Wendi Severance trailed Higginbotham by only three votes.

When you vote early …

You’re not alone. Travis County residents turned out in full presidential-level voting mode and tallied over 3,000 votes per hour. Here are the final election results.

When you turn pro …

Buh-bye NCAA. Former Lake Travis High School golf star, Kristen Gillman, will forgo her final two years of NCAA eligibility at Alabama and join the LPGA Tour as a rookie in 2019.

When you have a past …

Upcycle that. On Wednesday, LTL’s Cathy Hale introduced you to Eco Estate Jewelry. With the holidays approaching, estate jewelry may be the perfect gift for lots of people on your list, yourself included.

LTL Weekly & This Weekend in Lake Travis: November 2-4, 2018

When you crave this Halloween treat …

It’s not candy corn. This is the Halloween candy Texans love.

When you pass the test …

Drink your tap water freely. The Texas Commission on Environmental Quality gave Austin water the all clear. The city-wide boil water notice ended on Sunday, October 29.

When you wish you lived in Arizona …

But you don’t. It’s time to turn your clock back this weekend. And this is how we feel about that.

When you can’t cross the road …

Call these Steiner Ranch sisters. Their mission got the attention of transportation leaders. They hope to inspire other young people to take action.

When you need a new mattress …

You might have to drive farther. Mattress Firm increased the number of stores it plans to close in the Austin area.

When you can’t finish your burger …

Not cool. The Lakeway Whataburger was evacuated for a bomb threat on Tuesday.

When you exchange Tootsie Rolls for toys …

It’s Candy Buy-Back time at Learning Express Toys in the Hill Country Galleria from November 1-4. Exchange one pound of candy loot for one Toy Buck (maximum five pounds).

When you want to expand your turf …

Open up a sports complex. On Wednesday, LTL’s Cathy Hale talked about the plan for the Bee Creek Sports Complex.

When it goes from drought to deluge …

This historic Texas-sized flood happening in the Highland Lakes area is hitting us hard. And by us, I mean our entire community. Before we look at weekend events, we hope you — your family, friends, and neighbors — are all safe and sound.

The above photo was taken at Lakeway City Park on Wednesday. The picture we ran in our October 17 article is the same park photographed less than 24 hours earlier. Yes, those lush, green grounds you see on Tuesday were submerged by Wednesday morning.

Check out the Lake Travis Lifestyle Facebook Page and Instagram Page for more pictures and videos.

714 feet

The number when water would flow over the spillway of Mansfield Dam.

When you never get old …

Sunsets over Lake Travis. Thanks to Lake Travis resident and area newbie, Don Fowler, for this pretty sunset with a tropical twist. He entered our sunset photo contest, and you can enter too.

When after a series of highly non-scientific community polls …

You realize you’re not the only person craving this sort of place. Sloan + Parker is heading to Steiner Ranch in early November. The family-friendly bar will be taking over the former space of Kawa Asian Kitchen. Does anyone out there remember Fion?

When the kids will never forget it …

Memo to other top high school football programs: Do this. One of the nation’s top wide receivers was giving a spelling test to Lakeway Elementary students hours before Lake Travis demolished Austin High.

When your 100-year-old grandma went bowling …

This happened.

When you realize what you’re supposed to be doing …

Help others. A group of local 8th and 9th-grade students are training to run an obstacle race later this month to raise money for a retired Navy SEAL who’s now battling cancer. The group aims to raise $10,000 to support his treatment. You can contribute to the fundraiser here.

When you need mad ninja skills …

On Wednesday, LTL’s Cathy Hale introduced you to a local dojo with plenty of heart.

LTL Weekly & This Weekend in Lake Travis: August 24-26, 2018

Written by Todd Hower | August 23, 2018

When it has nothing to do with winning or losing …

The Vandegrift Viper’s football program did this on Saturday.

When it has everything to do with winning …

Baker Mayfield’s fantastic journey began at Lake Travis high school, and his story is incredible by anyone’s standards. However, with a particular group of millennials and Madden football junkies, being a bonafide Madden star takes the cake.

When you need a wheatgrass shot while shopping …

Get to Four Points. Daily Juice is planning to open a location inside the HEB.

When you’re eating fried chicken, and the sun goes down …

This never gets old.

This does get old …

So far, the triple-digit hot count for 2018 is now up to 42 in metro Austin, tying last year’s count. Only one other year in recent times had more: 2011 with the all-time record of 90.

When you’re in the mood for Cajun …

Get to Steiner Ranch. Hecho en Mexico moved out and Poppy’s Southern Recipes is moving in.

When you get a break from being trapped …

At least for a little while. The deer will be roaming free after Lakeway City Council voted unanimously to temporarily suspend the city’s deer management program for a year, starting immediately.

When you’re not first you’re last …

Lakeway’s mayor was busy doing this in the first 60 days.

When your teacher is the best  …

Congratulations to Megan Holden, an English II and AP art history teacher at Lake Travis High School for being nominated as one of six finalists for the 2019 Texas Teacher of the Year.

When your dishwasher is empty …

On Wednesday, LTL’s Cathy Hale shared a go-to guide for Kids Eat Free and meal deals at Lake Travis area restaurants.
