LTL Weekly & This Weekend in Lake Travis: December 14-16, 2018

Written by Todd Hower | December 13, 2018

When’s there’s no sense of urgency …

And then there’s no water. An “after action” report was delivered by Austin Water. The response to conserve water back on October 21 — when severe flooding overwhelmed the city’s water-treatment systems — was not well received. The reduction in water usage only came after the boil water notice was issued. And then the run on bottled water began. Austin Water is looking at ways to prevent the need to issue a future water-boil order.

When you want to get connected …

Give me sidewalks with that. Done. This approved roadway — with sidewalks — will connect Bee Cave Parkway to Ladera Boulevard and help to reduce traffic in the area. We could all use a little traffic reduction.

When you do NOT want to get connected …

WTF is route F? Steiner Ranch residents are feeling like “bait and switch” after Travis County proposed a permanent road for an evacuation route. There’s only one way out of the Steiner Ranch neighborhood, and that dumps you on 620. Not a good plan when you’re trying to outrun a wildfire (like in 2011). Travis County has been working on an evacuation route for years. Progress is now slowing down, and an effort to get questions answered and people on the same page is underway.

When you win at the Alamodome …

Next up, NRG Stadium in Houston. Lake Travis faces the unbeaten Northshore in the Class 6A Division I state semifinal on Saturday. Go Cavs!

When you need serenity now …

We have 30 seconds for you.

When you’re short on time to be festive…

We have 13 seconds for you.

When you have plenty of time to be festive…

In case you missed it, we gave you a rundown of some of the best places in the nearby Texas Hill Country to enjoy a stroll under twinkly holiday lights.

When you want someone else to cook …

On Wednesday, LTL’s Cathy Hale gave you a glimpse of new dining options headed your way and a quick look at the restaurants newly opened — and opening — in and around the Lake Travis area.

Aggressive Drivers on Lake Travis Roads: Just Stop It.

Written by Cathy Hale | January 12, 2017

Aggressive driving is bad news in Lake Travis.

On busy roadways like 620 and 71, it is also deadly.

Over the years, we’ve lost wonderful community members to auto accidents, so we know better. If everyone is aware of the real dangers that exist on our roads, why do we have so many reckless drivers?

And as a community, what can we do about it?

Yesterday I witnessed a truck get t-boned because a driver made an improper left turn across two lanes of oncoming traffic on 620. During 5 o’clock rush hour. The truck never saw it coming.

The Spicewood Destruction Derby Returns for Number 25

Written by Alicia Autrey | September 8, 2016

Up until a few years ago, if someone mentioned derby to me I would think horses and hats.

It wasn’t until my family relocated to Spicewood that we heard of the Spicewood Destruction Derby.

This event is held every fall and is a must attend for any self-respecting Spicewood resident. Okay … that might be a little heavy handed. If you like to throw back a beer in the heat of the day and watch things catch on fire, then this is the place for you!

My first encounter with the Spicewood Destruction Derby was a real eye-opener. Not knowing what exactly a Destruction Derby entailed, I was in for a real treat.

Briarcliff Bistro & Bacon Bar: A Labor of Love (with bacon)

Written by Mandy Spivey | June 16, 2016

The lattice bacon burger at BBBB

Playing with your food can get you a lot of strange looks from around your table, but what if the person who is braiding your bacon is the cook?

Welcome to Briarcliff Bistro & Bacon Bar in Spicewood, one of the Hill Country’s best-kept secrets for cool beers and bacon-themed food items. If you’re a fan of the salty sow’s back fat, get ready to meet the eatery that includes bacon in every dish, from Bloody Mary drinks to bacon-covered burgers.

Whether you’re on your way back from a long day of Hill Country wine tasting or you’re on your way out to Pace Bend Park, there are plenty of reasons to want to stop for a bite and a drink here. Live music makes the outdoor stage come alive with Texas tunes, while inside is cool and where most of the lively conversation takes place.

I got together with one of the trio of founders of the restaurant, Jennifer Halpine, to get a little bit of history of the bacon bar and just how it got to be such a famous Spicewood staple in recent years.
