Ahh Springtime. The time of the year in Texas when the clouds part in the afternoon for a few hours of glorious sunshine — which seems to be why I notice so many cobwebs and extra piles of stuff lying around in the corners of my house. With all of its energy-inducing splendor, you might just get the urge to spruce up your place a bit.
When it’s time to dust off the shelves and reorganize for a more efficient life, look no further than to local area causes to assist in the task.
Donating has never been easier or more effective in helping area charities, from local consignment stores to Lake Travis thrift shops. A spare toaster or a lovely blouse that you love but doesn’t fit might not be useful to you, but donate it and someone in need can have a go at it. The cycle of materials stays moving and your house becomes cleaner in the process.
Donate to a Thrift Store
As I go through my house when it’s time to Spring clean, I end up collecting quite a heap of things that I don’t seem to need or use anymore. Call it what you will (in my case, rampant materialism), I take it as a cue that it’s time to cull my closet and pare down my purses, and donate lightly used items to my local thrift store.
In Lake Travis there are several you can stop by, including Lakeway’s Goodwill, Lake Travis Thrift Shop and Savers in Cedar Park. Shoes, clothes, accessories and household items all make for great donations, and proceeds from sales often go to local charities.
Take It to Consignment
Once in a while I come across a dress or a painting that I would love to see go to a good home, but maybe would want to consign, instead. Depending on the piece of clothing and what is in season, your jeans that still have life in them could fetch you quite a pretty penny.
In Lakeway, Restyle is the place to bring your designer duds to have consigned, and the sooner you bring in your fashionable wears the more likely they are to still be in fashion and might sell faster.
If you’re looking to get rid of gently used maternity and children’s clothes, don’t forget to stop by Lakeway’s Sweetpeas for a chance to consign. Let another new mother enjoy that precious blouse, or save some space in your kids’ drawers and pass on the pieces to a new family. The new space will do wonders on your productivity and well-being at home, in addition to helping local families in need.
Don’t forget your furniture! If there is a bedroom set or desk that you know someone would love, bring it to a local consignment shop to see what it’s worth.
In the Lakeway area we have the Furniture Brokers, a group of sellers that scours the earth for the best pieces and their future owners. Make someone’s day, and a buck or two, and spruce up an old corner of your house today.
Good luck spring cleaning Lake Travis!
