Lake Travis Area History: Lago Vista

Written by Todd Hower | August 6, 2014

Lago Vista Sunset

In and around the Lake Travis area, one has their fair share of opportunities to take advantage of lake life. From exhilarating water sports to relaxing on the shores of Lake Travis, there’s a little taste of something for everyone.

And when city life gets to be too tiring, you might find yourself looking to the surrounding lake towns for a little getaway when needed. Whether you’re on the search for a place to call home or just a relaxing day trip, one of the spots on Lake Travis worth checking out is Lago Vista. Along the North Shore of Lake Travis sits this quaint lake town, best known for the laid-back lake vibes and leisure on the water.

A scenic drive down 1431 gives you an idea as to why Lago Vista is also known as “The Gateway to the Highland Lakes.” With a total area of just under 10 square miles, most of life — economic and social — centers around these man-made lakes. And Lago Vista has a little slice of Lake Travis to call its own.

Don Mario Mexican Restaurant: Mexico City Street Food in Lake Travis

Written by Todd Hower | July 10, 2014

Don Mario Mexican Restaurant

Back in 2010, a taqueria opened its doors in a small space off Hudson Bend Road across from the Los Pinos Restaurant. As with most inconspicuous restaurants that pop up in the area, you might find yourself a little hesitant to give it a try without hearing about it from someone else first.

Well, it didn’t take long for word of mouth to spread and for the five star reviews on Yelp to start coming in. Even people from South Austin were making the drive out to Lake Travis to experience items from a menu filled with a melting pot of traditional comfort foods from Mexico City.

And after four years at a place with only eight tables (and no liquor license), the dream of moving to a larger space became a reality when the former Sobani Restaurant was vacated. The more noticeable location is in the Light House Market at Ranch Road 620 and Oak Grove Blvd., just a few miles away from the inconspicuous original taqueria that started off Hudson Bend Rd.

Lake Travis Neighborhood Guide: Apache Shores

Written by Todd Hower | June 26, 2014

Apache Shores is one of the earlier neighborhoods to be developed in the Lake Travis area. The narrow and steep roads that wind through the subdivision and take you past the mix of residential styles can make you feel like you’re driving through a Colorado mountain town — but without the snow and ice.

Lake Travis locals have been calling this place home since the late 60’s along with second-home owners that visit throughout the year to escape the big city. And even though the big city is slowing closing in on the Lake Travis area, as you get off Ranch Road 620 and make your way back to Apache Shores, you can truly feel like you’re a world away.
