“Every painting is a voyage into a sacred harbour.” – Giotto di Bondone
Art inspires.
Art transports.
Art elevates the space it inhabits, bringing with it a connection between artist and viewer.
Lake Travis has a new gallery on the scene to take in and enjoy, exhibiting some of the finest paintings, sculptures, and even jewelry to a growing clientele.
Spending an afternoon perusing fine art at Russell Collection Fine Art Gallery, you might feel more like you’re on the Upper West Side than in the Oaks at Lakeway. Where Austin severely lacked fine art, gallery owner Lisa Russell sources and delivers to the Lake Travis area.
It’s a labor of love that started when Russell first came to Austin over a decade ago, bringing along her fine sense of taste.
After graduating from college at Arizona State University with an MBA, she moved to Austin with her husband — with no plans to start an art gallery. But her love of art and keen eye would lead her to start her first gallery in downtown Austin.
“I actually never thought I’d be in the art scene; I’ve grown up around it, my father is a collector, my grandmother was an artist, my mother is an interior designer,” Russell explains. “When I moved to Austin with my husband, I had always dreamed of opening a retail shop.”
Her inaugural gallery is based in town on West 6th Street, harboring some of the works of the Masters such as Manet, Picasso, Rembrandt, Renoir, Matisse, Mary Cassatt, Marc Chagall, Toulouse-Lautrec, to name a few. When Russell started seeing a pattern in her clientele, she began the search to open a second gallery.
It was the right time and the right place, with the Oaks at Lakeway opening with a spot with her name on it. She made a new home for her permanent collection in the space sandwiched between McArthur’s and Orange Theory Fitness, bringing her pieces and frame shop to the Lake Travis area.
“The Oaks at Lakeway opened, and so with it being new and really nicely done, I thought, ‘This will be perfect.'”
A Lake Travis local, she is able to share with the area some of the finest pieces of art to grace greater Austin, delivering rare works from artists with a local twist. The new store has a slightly different ambience than her other gallery, yet is still true to her unique style.
“I live out here, and I noticed that there wasn’t a nice frame shop and gallery out in Lakeway. I had a lot of clients coming from the Hill Country and Bee Caves … and I wanted to share art with the Lake Travis community.”
Not only is art available for sale at Russell’s gallery, it’s a hub for discussions and lectures about fine art, bringing in internationally known artists for talks such as Peter Max, Ray Donley, Alexandra Nechita, and Michael Kessler. This gives Lake Travis a new meeting spot for learning about fine art and the theories and history behind such beautiful pieces, educating and elevating her customers and art lovers simultaneously.
The full service gallery and frame shop is here to help Lake Travis locals find the pieces that inspire and uplift their spaces, making a piece of art a lasting treasure that can be passed down and enjoyed for generations to come.
