ROVE Supply: A Local Hangout Style Board Shop

Written by Mandy Spivey | September 29, 2014

Summer might be over, but with an average temperature of 80 degrees for October in the the Lake Travis area, the fun on Lake Travis and Lake Austin can continue well into the fall.

And when it comes to ways to enjoy the lake, fellow water warriors and board shop owners Dan and Holly Maxwell know a thing or two about boarding.

Wakesurf boards, stand up paddle boards, skateboards, cruiser boards — you name it — ROVE Supply off City Park Road at 2222 has it. If you’re in the market for a rental, like a kayak or SUP paddle board, the shop is ready to get you outfitted for some time on the water.

The colorful board shop opened August 1st to serve the needs of Austinites looking for a memorable time on the lake, quickly filling the quaint bungalow-style shop with a plethora of boards, apparel, light outdoor accessories and all of the little extras you might need for a trip out to Lake Austin or Lake Travis.

“I like to say, ‘we don’t mind if you come here ten times and don’t spend a dime. We just want to have a good time, hang out.’ On Thursdays we have Thirsty Thursdays where we have beer at the shop and just have a really chill time,” Dan tells me.

And they work hard to keep the vibe this mellow. In fact, they even have a scenic outdoor hangout area just outside their building — perfect for you and a few friends to wind down after your time on the lake.

The husband and wife duo moved to the area 5 years ago; Dan has a history in the fitness industry and owned a software company, Holly is a creative with a background in graphic design. They combined their mutual love of the lake and decided to make the move to open Rove Supply on the tail-end of their wedding.

It’s been a whirlwind opening the shop since then, but the space is really starting to fill in and features a boutique for men and women, complete with bright tribal-themed swim suits, brand name board shorts and just the right selection of accessories to get your day at the lake started off right.

The decision to move into the spot was an easy one for the couple, who live on Lake Austin themselves. When you don’t see them at the shop (Monday is the only day the doors are closed), you can catch them ripping some waves down on the lake.

“We’re lake rats — we have a ton of friends on the lake that gave us the feeling that we’d have the support to open the store,” Dan states as we discuss the opening of the store and their upcoming events with their lakeside neighbors.

ROVE Supply teams up with area lake joint, Ski Shores Cafe, to bring Austin Paddle Jams, which consist of a scenic tour of Lake Austin on their SUP paddle boards, capped off with a delicious brunch or lunch after the ride is over. You get  to try your hand at the stand up paddle boarding experience, see a new part of the lake and get a great bite to eat in the end.

You can rent boards for a full day or a half day right from their website, or stop by the store to see what they have in stock. If you’re in need of some cool threads to wear out on the water, don’t hesitate to take a look around their carefully curated boutique of swim suits and clothes for even the pickiest of surf shoppers.
