One of the best parts of living in the Lake Travis area are the many opportunities to be active with your family. FitSmart, sponsored by Lake Travis ISD, is a perfect example of an active-lifestyle and family-friendly event.
FitSmart 2015 is Sunday, May 3 from 10:00am to 2:00pm at Lake Travis High School. This free event is fun for all ages. And if you do not have high school-age children, this is a great opportunity to see the sports facilities up close. (And trust me, you will not be disappointed. This is Texas high school sports facilities like you’ve seen in the movies!)
My family has gone to FitSmart for the past two years and each year it gets better. The event kicks off with a family fun run/walk at 10:30am followed by a 5k for the more adventurous. All the children that finish the fun run/walk receive a medal, which is always a hit with the young participants.
After the run, you are welcome to explore several different areas on the campus. Inside the Cav Café (cafeteria), you will find several Lake Travis ISD nutrition and wellness programs represented. Everything from bullying prevention to a healthy cooking demonstration, the Cav Café offers a wealth of information, fun experiences and a break from the sun.
Head on over to the Cavalier Center where children of all ages (yes, parents, too) can interact with coaches and team members from the high school sports teams. This is such an incredible opportunity for young athletes! The center alone is extremely impressive — it is an indoor half football field, complete with Astroturf, a field goal and a scoreboard.
Kids will eat up the one-on-one opportunities to play with members of the baseball, softball, basketball, football, tennis, soccer and volleyball teams. This, by far, was my kids’ favorite part of the expo. And I finally fulfilled a life long dream and kicked a field goal.
Be sure to check out the activities on the football field before the day is over. You will enjoy participating in the family obstacle course and the kids will love rolling down to the 50-yard line in a life-sized hamster ball.
There is also a gaga pit that will keep your children occupied. (I had never heard of a gaga pit until we moved here. For those of you who are clueless like I was, let me fill you in: Gaga is a variation of dodgeball but it is played with one ball. The kids all get into an octagon shaped frame where the object of the game is to avoid being hit with the ball. Kids are jumping and dodging and having a good time all around. The winner is the last one in the pit that was not hit.)
Several community sponsors such as St. David’s Hospital, Juiceland and Whole Foods will also be on hand — many with samples, coupons or giveaways — so be sure to find them, too.
This event is so much fun and you and your kids will sleep well after all these activities! Whether you plan to run or walk, be sure to bring a water bottle (there will be refill stations around the campus) and wear your sunglasses and sunscreen — the run/walk and the activities on the football field don’t offer much shade.
Fitsmart is also looking for volunteers. Adults or any student 8th grade or older can volunteer and earn services hours. There are three different volunteer time slots so even the volunteers can take some time to participate in all the events, too. To volunteer, you can sign up here.
