Lake Travis Area Day Trip for Pumpkins and World-Famous Pie

Halloween is right around the corner and it’s time to get your pumpkins!

Sure, you could make a quick trip to the local grocery store and grab a few pumpkins, but that would be boring. You’ve got a family that wants adventure and there are only a few weekends left before your neighborhood streets are filled with zombies in search of free candy.

How about taking a scenic drive through the Hill Country in search of pumpkins? And let’s throw in a little bonus to make your adventure even better — a slice of world-famous pie.

Just like spring is the perfect time for pictures in the bluebonnets, fall is the perfect time for pictures in the pumpkins.

A great place to capture those pics is at Sweet Berry Farm in Marble Falls, less than an hour away from the Lake Travis area.

Besides searching for that perfect pumpkin, Sweet Berry Farm is loaded with fun activities for the whole family. Stuff your own scarecrow, hayrides, train rides, bouncies, and goats that are always hungry.

Try out your navigation skills in the four acre Texas Hayfield Maze and locate the twelve Texas towns marked on this years map … good luck with that! A couple of additional activities like horse rides and face painting are offered on the weekends.

You can bring your own lunch (picnic tables are available) or grab something from the Pumpkin Grill (weekends only) before filling up on the homemade ice cream and strawberry popsicles.

There are no parking or entrance fees, but you will need money for pumpkins, gourds, activities, and food. Here are the Harvest of Fall Fun Prices starting the last weekend in September and running through the first weekend in November.

Bring your camera, cash, sunscreen and sturdy shoes (no pets). If you have really little ones, a wagon or stroller is a good idea. There’s a lot of ground to cover and you don’t want to get stuck carrying your kids and pumpkins.

Stop for breakfast or lunch on the way there, or dinner on the way home — just make sure you stop!

The Blue Bonnet Cafe located on Main Street in Marble Falls has been open since 1929. Sure they have good food, but wait until you see the selection of world-famous pies. You’ve got to appreciate the pies topped with meringue as tall as your head.

A few things to know …

  • If you happen to be rolling through around lunch time on Sunday there will be a line of people waiting to be seated that goes out the door and around the parking lot.
  • Don’t be thinking and talking about world-famous pie all day and show up Sunday evening. Your family will make you walk home when you discover that Sunday is the day they close at 1:45 pm.
  • Pie Happy Hour is Monday through Friday from 3pm – 5pm.
  • The Blue Bonnet Cafe is cash only with an ATM on-site.
  • The restaurant is named after a blue “bonnet” or hat, not the popular Texas wildflower.
