The Lake Travis area is blessed with many wonderful outdoor spaces, and Lakeway City Park is one of my favorites. At 64 acres it’s a huge area with plenty of options for all ages and interests.
My favorite thing about Lakeway City Park is the large paved path that loops around the park. Because it’s away from busy streets and usually not too crowded it was perfect when my daughters first learned to ride their bikes. They could practice wobbling while I jogged alongside. It’s a scenic path, and at any time you’ll likely see joggers, walkers, pets and families enjoying the sights along the 1+ mile loop.
My family still takes advantage of the path, but we always stop for a break at the Butterfly Garden. It’s a fenced area right near the path, and depending on the season there can be tons of butterflies. The kids love it, and it really is a neat spot — especially when the plants and flowers are in bloom.
The park has two playscape areas — one at the top for younger children and a larger one further down for older kids. There’s also sand volleyball, a basketball court and a baseball field nearby. Then again if shuffleboard, washers and horseshoes are more your speed you’re in luck, because you can do that as well. There’s also a huge field perfect for Frisbee or an impromptu game of Red Rover (just kidding — I’m pretty sure they banned that game, don’t get any ideas). Soccer maybe? Kite flying? Whatever you choose, a big field has endless possibilities.
Another highlight of Lakeway City Park is the bark park. Dog parks are not only fun for dogs, but they also provide a great opportunity for owners to meet and mingle.
Finally, if/when the lake is full you can actually go swimming at the park. The “swim at your own risk” signs seem like a mean tease these days, but I have faith that it’s only a matter of time before we can add swimming and fishing back to the list of amenities at Lakeway City Park. And with or without a full lake, this park has plenty of reasons to visit.
It’s the perfect place to take a picnic and spend the afternoon with friends, families or pets. The park also hosts a number of community events throughout the year, such as an Easter Egg Hunt, Halloween events, Movies in the Park and more.
Lakeway City Park is located at 502 Hurst Creek Road (map). There are two parking areas, so you can park upon entering or continue further down to the second area.
