Hey Cupcake! The Original Lake Travis Area Food Trailer

Written by Mandy Spivey | August 13, 2014

Hey Cupcake! on 620

If you frequently pass through the intersection at Ranch Road 620 and 2222 at Four Points (or spend time sitting there in traffic), you can’t miss the vintage Airstream trailer with a big cupcake on top. Hey Cupcake! is one part awesome mini cakes and one part excellent service — and together you get the full Hey Cupcake! experience.

You might remember when Hey Cupcake! first started out at the South Congress location. Not long after that, another Airstream was added to the fleet and parked out at the Four Points location in front of Thundercloud Subs. It was one of the first food trailers to land in the Lake Travis area.

One of the things I love about a trip to Hey Cupcake! is to try their ever-rotating seasonal cupcake flavors. In the summer it’s more fruit-based, like the Coco Loco (coconut buttercream with coconut cake). In cooler climates and Autumn time, expect to see The Pumpkinator, which makes its debut in September. Christmas will bring mint flavors like the Mint Rushmore, bursting with desserty-goodness with mint buttercream and chocolate cake. And of course there are tried and true mainstays, such as the Red Velvet, The Standard, or the Double Dose for those chocoholics among us.

The dream of one day owning a cupcake business was the imagining of Wes Hurt, who along with the help of his friend Brian Morris, began the real life plans to make it a reality. In 2007, they opened their doors, but within two months they were out of business. A bad location was to blame, so after a lot of brainstorming and a bit of hunch, Hurt came up with the idea of purchasing a vintage trailer to make Hey Cupcake!’s new location a portable one.

Now with five fully restored Airstreams, a converted ice cream truck that serves as their catering vehicle, and a brick and mortar store/bakery — the hunch to serve cupcakes out of a trailer seems to have been a good one. Baking thousands of cupcakes a day out of their Burnet Rd. location, the cupcake shop is also used for catering and can serve up a uniquely-Austin way of savoring sweets. Don’t miss out on their collaborative ice cream-cupcake creations from Coolhaus offered during the summer months.
