The Curmudgeon Carp?
The Stubborn Sturgeon?
Nope, it’s The Grumpy Grouper, Lake Travis’ newest saloon and grill.
Located between Lake Travis Elementary and Hudson Bend Middle School, The Grumpy Grouper sits back off the road at 1113 Ranch Road 620 in the space that was once Detour Bar & Grill.
The venue has a large indoor area (non-smoking) with plenty of seating, pool tables, a foosball table, “sweepstakes” games, big screen TVs and a roomy bar. It also has a large outdoor patio with a shaded bar, TV and seating.
When you stroll through the front door, you’ll see the stage on your left and if you show up on Friday or Saturday night, chances are it will be rockin’. That’s because The Grumpy Grouper has live music every Friday and Saturday night from 9pm until 1am.
But if you dig a bit deeper into their role as a music venue, you might be surprised by just how much they’re supporting local musicians.
Live Music at The Grumpy Grouper
Local artists like Carl Hutchens and Dawn Maracle are just a few of the musicians that draw a crowd, but The Grumpy Grouper welcomes all types of musicians from jazz bands to rock-n-roll to country to honky tonk. And there is never a cover because the owner of The Grumpy Grouper believes nobody should have to pay to listen to good music. Amen to that!
On the last Tuesday of the month The Grumpy Grouper may be a bit quieter than normal because it’s the location where Songwriters Across Texas is filmed, a television show on CW KNVA that showcases local songwriters.
In fact, the show’s motto is “Get The Music Out” and that’s exactly what they’re doing. They’ve aired over 100 episodes with more than 120 artists. Last Sunday’s episode featured Brian Pounds, Jay Parr, Emily Herring and Devin Jake.
Food at The Grumpy Grouper
If you’re headed to The Grumpy Grouper with an appetite for local BBQ, you’re in luck. The kitchen is run by JC’s Smokehouse (daily except Mondays) and the menu items are delicious. You can get brisket or chopped beef from the pit or the grill with yummy homemade sides. They even do to go orders that range from one pound of meat for 2-3 people up to 11 pounds of meat and 6 sides that feeds 20-30 people.
Next month, The Grumpy Grouper will celebrate football season by opening at 10am on Sundays with an all-you-can-eat breakfast that includes one complimentary beverage. There are plenty of big screen TVs inside and out, so you won’t miss a play.
The Grumpy Grouper welcomes everyone and says the clientele changes nightly depending on the music and the night. Patrons come in from Steiner Ranch, Hudson Bend, Lakeway, and Bee Cave to unwind, enjoy live music and chow down on some tasty local BBQ.
When you’re looking for something to do on a weekend night, this big place with a funny name may be just what you’re looking for.
