If you’ve been around the Oasis on Lake Travis lately, you might have noticed some big changes going on around these parts.
Upstairs behind the vintage turquoise door sits Giddyup Pickle, one of the newest additions to the area and a colorful gift shop right on the edge of Lake Travis. You know you’re in the right spot when you see their mascot, Pickle, the cowboy parrot.
Based on a “labor of love” between husband and wife product developers, Giddyup Pickle now seeks to serve Austinites this side of the lake the finest in perfect vintage, up-cycled handmade goodies and one-of-a-kind gifts and housewares. We’re talking items like chic feather necklaces made from bike tires, wood and resin cast necklaces and a smattering of colorful vintage cowboy handkerchiefs, just to name a handful.
And the shop itself has a little something for everyone. Your kids will have a cool collection of toys to peruse, such as up-cycled plush monsters, zombie sock puppets and felted desserts. Husbands who get drawn into shopping won’t be disappointed either — there’s many products for guys including vintage radios, handmade vinyl and CD clocks and screen printed leather wallets.
All of the items curated by Suzie Shread are unique and some are even rare finds, like the awesome stock of deadstock 80s sunglasses she managed to procure and vintage antique radios found throughout the shop. Many of the items are made by Suzie herself, like the silk tie hats and headbands and much of the jewelry that you see around the store. Be sure to check out the digitally-printed Lake Travis map pillows that they are adding to the store soon!
Aiming to embody that colorful South Congress gift shop vibe, Giddyup Pickle is packed with cowboys, colorful painted skulls and just a hint of Austin weirdness. Next time you come out for dinner at The Oasis, make a point to stop by the store for a rotating collection of souvenirs and gifts you can’t find anywhere else.
And if you’re wondering what’s the story behind the green parrot, Pickle — he was their beloved pet, a talking bird who had a habit of always saying his name after everything. In the morning, he would greet you with a cheery, “Giddyup, Pickle!”. Now he is immortalized at the store by giving it the trademark name and playful spirit that lives on in the shop.
Open Wednesday through Sunday, the store has soft openings during the week and is open all day on weekends.
Hours: Wednesday-Sunday
