ShedStreet: Helping Lake Travis Neighbors Share Stuff

Written by Todd Hower | March 12, 2014

Do you have a garage filled with sporting equipment, ladders, tools, and all kinds of other items you’ve collected over the years? Or maybe you’re thinking about purchasing a kayak but would like to try one out before you buy.

What if there was a service that would bring Lake Travis area neighbors together to lend and borrow all the things that get stored up in our garages and sheds?

The platform allowing this to happen was thought up and created by two Steiner Ranch residents. It’s called ShedStreet and after launching just over a year ago, Lake Travis area residents have filled the site with a variety of items. You’ll find everything from extension ladders and kayaks to a crawfish boil pot and outdoor movie screen.

While browsing the site, I also came across a couple of other items that caught my attention. There was a wiener-beagle mix named Steve and a French accent for rent. You can borrow either one for $5 a day.

Capital City Running: Shoes and Water for Lake Travis Runners

Written by Emily O'Shaughnessy | March 7, 2014

Capital City Running in Lakeway

Capital City Running is a family-owned running specialty store located in the Lake Travis area. Not only do they have everything you need for running including shoes, apparel and gear, but they are the nice folks responsible for the water stations that faithfully appear on running routes each weekend.

If you’re a runner in the Steiner Ranch neighborhood, there’s a good chance that you’ve stopped for a break at one of the two stations in the neighborhood. They leave a jug of water, paper cups, a trash bag for disposal and another thoughtful addition—a water bowl for the furry runners as well. My dog Nugget and I both take advantage of the water, and would like to say a huge thanks!

The water is just one of the things they do to support the Lake Travis area running community. The experienced staff has tons of product knowledge, industry news and training tips. They cater to all levels, from beginners lacing up their first pair of shoes to experienced runners competing in major competitions. They take the time to get to know and understand each customer’s fitness goals so they can help him or her achieve them safely.

Con’ Olio Oils and Vinegars: Taste the Difference

Written by Mandy Spivey | February 25, 2014

conolio-7 (1)

The first bite of a cheesy margherita pizza fresh out of the oven. The crisp taste of a cool Greek salad with homemade dressing. The spicy fried goodness of anything cooked in a wok. I savor these food moments in life.

There are certain ingredients that will always make a difference in the taste and quality of a dish, but taking the time to learn about the science of it all can be daunting on its own.

Take a look around your kitchen pantry and check your stock of olive oil.

Do you know where it was grown and harvested?

Can you tell its crush date?

Have you ever tasted its polyphenals or been able to savor its fruity undertones?

I bet you didn’t even know these things mattered when tasting and buying olive oil.

There is a fine art to understanding the vibrant complexities found in a quality olive oil, and Austin area olive aficionados Jeff and Tabatha Conarko are stepping in to help.

Taking the confusion and turning it into a delicious learning experience, the husband and wife duo have just opened their third Con’ Olio store. Visit the Austin stores or their newest Lake Travis area location in Bee Cave at the Shops at the Galleria.

Be prepared to question all you thought you knew about a good Extra Virgin Olive Oil or a Balsamic Vinegar.

Thrift Shopping in the Lake Travis Area

Written by Emily O'Shaughnessy | February 3, 2014

Thrift Stores in Lake Travis

Ok, I’ll admit it.  I’m a sucker for thrift stores. Given the choice of shopping at the mall or sifting through racks of vintage clothing I’ll take the old stuff any day. Now I realize they’re not for everyone—but I also know I’m in good company. Secondhand stores are widely popular these days and people of all ages, demographics and income levels proudly frequent them in search of hidden treasures.

There used to be a sort of stigma attached to thrift stores, but thankfully any negative label is long gone. Somewhere along the lines it became cool to shop secondhand.  And that’s a good thing.

Hill Country Apothecary
