Get Your In-Season Foodie Fix at Lone Star Farmer's Market

Written by Cathy Hale | July 22, 2015

The summer heat has finally landed in Lake Travis with temperatures hovering around 99 degrees these days. But the good news is, lots of delicious fruits and veggies are still in season, so if you’re getting tired of grilling hotdogs, check out some of the foods from Lone Star Farmer’s Market at Bee Cave located at Shops at the Galleria.

Your inner foodie will thank you.

Have you ever wondered what “in season” actually means when it comes to fruits and vegetables? Well, in-season foods are more likely to be at their nutritional peak, chock full of the good stuff your body needs for optimum health.

Based on where you live and the current time of the year, certain foods are traditionally harvested and more readily available nearby. Some people believe that in-season foods are exactly what your body needs at that time of the year.

The Boardroom: A Salon for the Men (and future men) of Lake Travis

Written by Todd Hower | May 28, 2015

The Boardroom Salon for Men

Editor’s Note: My first experience at The Boardroom was comped. It was so enjoyable that I continue to go … and the place that I had been going to for nearly ten years hasn’t called wondering why I haven’t shown up in a while.

Gentlemen. Have you been getting your haircut at a salon designed for ladies? Or the Super-Duper-Cuts that has you wondering what new style you’re going to walk out with today?

Last time you made sure to bring your baseball cap so you could quickly cover up your new do. The time before that you walked out looking like Lloyd Christmas.

Gentlemen — it’s time to get your haircut at a manly place … and enjoy the ultimate relaxed grooming experience while you’re at it.

Ladies — Father’s Day (June 21) is right around the corner if you’re looking for that place to send your man away for a couple hours. You’ll get him back cleaned up, relaxed and feeling like a man again (bonus for you).

Little Leaves Clothing Company: Lake Travis Locals Making Sun Protective Clothing for Kids

Written by Maureen O'Shay | May 12, 2015

As summer approaches, Lake Travis residents begin to make our way to the lakes, pools and beaches. We love our fun in the sun! We know to bring our sunscreen, hats and sunglasses. We are not rookies at this. But recently I found out that sun damage can occur within 15 minutes of sun exposure and my family and I should be wearing sunscreen everyday — not just while out on the lake and not just when the sun is out.

So, sunscreen: Every. Single. Day.

As a mom of two young girls, dealing with the “sunscreen battle” is not on my list of favorite things to do at all, let alone every single day (honestly, it is right up there with cleaning toilets and packing lunches). My girls are so wiggly and often I get “IT’S IN MY EYES!” complaint (it really is never in their eyes).

Lake Travis Local: Meet Dr. Candace Thrash of Fresh Dermatology

Written by Cathy Hale | April 8, 2015

Fresh Dermatology

When Dr. Candace Thrash opened her practice in Lakeway, she put a lot of thought into the name. She wanted it to invoke a sense of a happy work environment that supports its staff and its community, a business that is sensitive to its surroundings and conducts itself with integrity. She also wanted a name that represented her goals for her clients. Candace wants them be healthy, feel youthful and above all, be the best version of themselves. So in 2013, Fresh Dermatology was born.

Candace is a graduate of the University of Texas and earned her medical degree at the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio. After completing her internship at Northwestern University and her residency at the world-famous Cook County Hospital in Chicago, she operated her own practice. Then Candace and her family moved to Austin and the rest as they say, is history.

Beyond Bowties: Lake Travis Education Foundation is Bridging the Gap

Written by Cathy Hale | March 26, 2015

LTEF Gala

You may have seen pictures from the Lake Travis Education Foundation’s Bowties and Butterflies Gala flooding your Facebook page a few weeks ago, but make no mistake, this event reaches far beyond the playfully coined “Mom Prom” moniker. Those smiling faces in the photos are making a big difference in our children’s education.

This year, the Lake Travis Education Foundation gala raised more than $165,000 with the live auction bringing in $90,000, the silent auction bringing in about $43,000 and straight donations that night alone in the amount of $32,000.

So how does this money help? In more ways than you think. “If your child attends an Lake Travis ISD school, they are touched by a gift that was made possible by the gala,” says LTEF Executive Director Suzanne Stone. “The dollars we raise at the event — and all year long — go right back into the schools.”
