#TBT Back in the Day in Lake Travis: Piggly Wiggly, Horses & Mudding in Rough Hollow

Written by Cathy Hale | September 22, 2016

“I remember when …” seems to be a common response when you tell someone you reside in the Lake Travis area. There are lots of folks who may not live here now, but fondly remember spending quality time here back in the day.

What’s funny is most of these stories revolve around Randalls. For example …

“I remember when The Chair King was Randalls …”

“I remember when the Randalls was the Lakeway Rodeo.”

Whaaa? There was a rodeo in Lakeway?

“I remember when Randalls was AppleTree.”

Okay, you win!

In order to paint an accurate picture of what the area truly looked like, we consulted with Lake Travis resident, real estate broker, and entrepreneur Cassie Ford. Her family moved to the Lakeway area in 1981 when she was a kid.

If you’re one of those people who likes to wax nostalgic about the glory days of Lake Travis, feel free to help us fill in the blanks with your own memories.

If you’re new to the Lake Travis area, sit back, grab a cup of coffee and take an entertaining journey with us on this Throwback Thursday!

Lake Travis Roadwork: What You Get For $11 Million Dollars

Written by Cathy Hale | August 31, 2016

Remember when the words “elevated highway” made everyone put down their chai lattes and take notice?

Back in February, we had a little bit of fun breaking down the TxDOT Feasibility Study. Ah, those were the days!

We highlighted some obvious traffic woes that exist on 620 like the “failing” intersections that are ill-equipped to handle growth in the next 20 years.

We explored the dangerous nature of accidents on 620 and explained why hooded left turns may indeed be the solution. Yes, hooded left turns are a real thing.

The final point was that no funding is available for the proposed changes.

There is money for the current transportation projects you may be observing on and around 620 right now.

What’s happening on Lake Travis area roadways? How much is being spent? And who’s paying for it?

5 Things You Didn’t Plan On Doing This Summer

Written by Emily O'Shaughnessy | August 18, 2016

Back to School Card

Summer is winding down and many of us are gearing up for back to school.

Whether you spent the summer preparing your firstborn (and yourself — sniff sniff) for kindergarten or visiting colleges with your incoming senior, it’s impossible to escape the anticipation. But in many households (mine included) it’s hard to tell who is more excited — the kids or the parents.

Has anyone else been counting down the days until school starts?

Yes, we love our kids and yes, we love summer. The smell of sunscreen, the sand between our toes, tan lines, boating on the lake. Summer ales.

But let’s face it. It’s time.

Lake Travis Update: A Surprisingly Soggy End to Summer

Written by Cathy Hale | August 17, 2016

Triple-digit temperatures in the Lake Travis area rolled out as quickly as they arrived back in July. Blazing heat and crunchy yellow grass has been exchanged for unusually cool and rainy days this week.

Austin just had the coolest August 15th on record since the 1800s. If you were wearing a long sleeve jacket in your home yesterday and watching the Olympics tucked under a blanket, you weren’t alone.

Thanks to all of the rain, Lake Travis is back up to 95% full. Waking up to your smartphone honking and buzzing at you is part of the process as the lake refills and you deal with flash flooding. And flash flooding in this area is serious business.

13 Signs You Might Be From Lago Vista

Written by Sandra Spicher | July 27, 2016

Amanda Yetley Yoga at Balcones National Wildlife Refuge

Unless you’re about twelve, it’s unlikely you’re actually from Lago Vista. Even those who’ve lived here the longest seem to have moved in after they learned to talk.

This list of community traits was unscientifically extorted from random people on the street, none of whom claim to be native Lago Vistans. The list did seem to fall into just a few broad categories, though.
