The Curious Tale of Two Turkeys in Lake Travis

Written by Cathy Hale | January 18, 2018

Lakeway has literally gone to the birds, friends. No, not because of traffic and commercial development, but because of literal birds. Specifically, two turkeys.

For Lake Travis resident Suzy Aubert, the tale of two turkeys in Lake Travis has been a mystery since May of 2017, when she spotted this fab fowl duo on her property in Serene Hills.

The first time she saw them it was quite a shock because you typically don’t see two turkeys waddling across your lawn in Lakeway. Wild boars, roadrunners, skunks, possum, coyotes — yes — but not turkeys. Now it’s becoming commonplace.

Lakeway isn’t being overrun by a rafter of turkeys, it’s just these two. They supposedly live behind The Lakeway Church and are often spotted across the street at the Lakeway Texaco on the corner of Lakeway Blvd. and Lohmans Crossing (as pictured above).

Why are they here?

Are they a couple? Aww, cute!

When will they leave?

Today we’ll answer all of your burning questions about Lakeway’s Meleagris gallopavo intermedia.

Ode to Moms: Away in a Range Rover

Written by Cathy Hale | December 21, 2017

Away in a Range Rover,
because the Escalade’s in the shop.
We’re road trippin’ for Christmas,
to see Nana and Pop.

A 10-hour car ride,
I’d rather stay in my bed.
I just had a glorious fantasy —
Can I binge watch Netflix till I’m dead?

5 Must-See Lake Travis Area Dance Halls

Written by Cathy Hale | November 2, 2017

The dance halls peppered throughout Texas are about more than live music and two-steppin’ to the rhythm. They’re a poetic nod to community, culture, and family. A romantic notion that’s simple and uncluttered.

Over the years, many of these dance halls have been torn down, but thanks to champions who fight for them, many are still swinging today. The floors may be scuffed and crooked, but that’s part of the historic charm.

If you live in the Lake Travis area, you’re surrounded by some of the state’s most treasured dance halls. Let’s take a look at five must-see dance halls that are a hop, skip and jump away from Lake Travis. In other words, maybe an hour’s drive at most.

Grab your cowboy boots and get ready for some toe-tapping fun!

A Non-Texan Explores Lake Travis’ Homecoming Mum Tradition: Shut the Front Door!?!

Written by Cathy Hale | September 21, 2017

Homecoming is next month, which means the mum craze has already hit the Lake Travis area. If you’re from Texas, you know all about this time-honored tradition. If you’re a non-Texan like me, hold onto your hats! Homecoming mums are a wild, theatrical ride.

I’ve lived in Texas since 1999, and I can honestly say there have only been two quirky things about the Lone Star state that surprised me. First, fire ants — those ferocious, little devils. Second, the homecoming mum tradition. When I first learned about mums, I thought Lake Travis residents were just being dramatic.

Surely corsages don’t hang down to the floor and cost $500. That’s absurd.

When my best friend showed me a photo of her daughter at homecoming, I was gobsmacked. In fact, my exact words were, “Are you #@$%*ing kidding me?!?”

Lake Travis Community Rallies to Support Harvey Relief Efforts

Written by Cathy Hale | August 31, 2017

God bless the doers. The people who take action to help someone in need. Their actions may seem small or insignificant at first, but in the long run, they are truly meaningful. Lucky for us we live in Lake Travis — a community full of doers who genuinely love their fellow Texans.

The outpouring of help for Harvey victims can be found throughout the Texas Hill Country. It seems like we’ve all been affected in one way or another. Everyone has a story to share.

As of writing this article, our community has family members and friends who are still stranded in flooded homes, hoping and praying that the water recedes. Beloved beach homes in Port Aransas and Rockport are smashed to pieces. Loved ones are missing and their families are frantically trying to find them. And the sad stories continue to emerge.

But instead of being paralyzed by hopelessness, Texans are coming together to ease the pain and provide relief for families (and animals) in need. Today we’ve got a roundup of local residents and businesses who are making a difference.
