Socktober: Be Part of Making Good Stuff Happen

Written by Todd Hower | October 8, 2014

Did you know that socks are one of the most frequently requested items by shelters and often overlooked when people make donations?

Socktober is a campaign to get people to donate socks and other much needed goods to the homeless. It was started back in 2010 by a family as a fun way to get friends and loved ones involved in doing something important.

It was July of 2012 when the same family started a web show featuring Robby Novak, the ten year old YouTube sensation, also known as Kid President. He posts a video each Thursday encouraging his followers to “be more awesome”.

Watch D.O.G.S – Calling All Dads

Written by Todd Hower | September 9, 2014

Watch DOGS

This one is for all the dads out there. School is back in session and you have an opportunity to show up in the classrooms and hallways as a WatchDOG for Leander ISD.

WATCH D.O.G.S. (Dads of Great Students) is a non-profit organization which began in 1998 by Jim Moore, immediately after the Jonesboro, Arkansas, middle school shooting tragedy. What started in a single school in Springdale, Arkansas has grown into a nationally recognized program. The program runs K-12 and invites fathers, grandfathers, uncles, or other father figures to volunteer at least one day at your child’s or student’s school during the school year.

Committing to a full day off work may seem like a big deal at the time, but after you spend a day in the school as a WatchDOG and experience the excitement of the children and how important you are to them, you’ll want to do it again.

In the spirit of back-to-school season, here are our cheers & jeers:

How Lake Travis is Keeping Austin Weird

Written by Cathy Hale | June 24, 2014

Banana Car

Yes, Austin loves its weirdos. And you don’t have to live in downtown Austin to embrace your inner weird. From Westlake to Lakeway to Steiner Ranch, we’re doing our part to keep our favorite tagline alive and well in the burbs too.

First of all, we should give credit where credit is due. In 2000, the Austin Independent Business Alliance adopted the “Keep Austin Weird” slogan in an effort to promote small businesses. Those three little words stuck like glue and we started seeing the famous bumper stickers. In fact, the slogan was so widely admired, many other cities started adopting it as their slogan too — like Portland. (Of course they did.)

So why are we happy about being weird? Well, the message is a positive one celebrating Austin for having an accepting culture where artistic expression thrives and we embrace progressive growth politically, socially and in culture — especially music. And we love and support our local businesses. This spirit is what keeps our city (and our suburbs) vibrant and eclectic.
