Who knew life in the 78738 and the 78734 could be so enjoyable? Your little lakeside town has grown into a bustling city. You may only have 13.17 square miles of the Texas Hill Country to call your own, but you make the most of every inch. Just look at how much you can squeeze into it!

Despite the massive growth and development in Lakeway, it’s still a beautiful place to call home. You have everything you could ever want in a community like a state-of-the-art hospital, great schools, world-class golf courses, parks, shopping, dining, bowling and of course, a gorgeous lake that is full. Hooray!

But once in a while you need to stretch your legs and venture out into the world. Yes, occasionally you leave Lakeway. When you do … well, er … you are easily spotted.

In her award-winning historical novel Mayhem: Three Lives of a Woman, Elizabeth Harris has a fish camp as the setting of ongoing harassment and a shocking crime. She sums up the Texas tradition: “Fish camp was a time before it was a fixed place.”

At the fixed place where Lake Austin Spa Resort is now, in a time shortly after the construction of the Mansfield Dam, a rustic fishing lodge was built. Lake Austin Lodges ran the property from the late 1940s to the early 1970s.

Alcatraz.

It’s a sad but too true fact in the world of travel that not all islands are idyllic, coconut-sipping hotspots. Escapes from the daily grind, where sand is delightful in the toes and cocktails shade under paper umbrellas.

And while plenty of tourists still flock to less than desirable destinations — like those mentioned above — not many folks back home take the “wish you were here” postcard seriously. It’s more of a “better you than me” feeling.

Only slightly less famous (and a tad closer to home) is Sometimes Island, a strip of land which rises from the depths of a drought-ravaged Lake Travis anytime the sky decides to really dry up.

Since such meteorological events are a way of life in our grand Texas, the island no one really wants to see (or visit) has become a common sight for the way better part of a century.
