Lake Travis in September

Written by Cathy Hale | April 7, 2016

Lake Travis full or half full

On May 13, 2015, the once elusive rain clouds settled over the Texas Hill Country and the optimistic chatter about filling up Lake Travis began.

At that time, Lake Travis was only 38% full at 630′ and Sometimes Island was looking more like a peninsula.

Today Lake Travis is full at 681.1′ … and it’s beautiful!

Even though February and March have been somewhat dry, the Highland Lakes (Buchanan and Lake Travis) have continued to hold steady. In fact, Lake Travis is nine feet above average and the combined storage of lakes Buchanan and Travis is at 96% full.

But managing a full Lake Travis is a real balancing act. You have a growing population in Austin. Water releases. An ever-increasing demand for water. And it all gets coupled with possible flooding.

What water releases are planned as summer approaches? And where will water levels be when summer is over?

World Autism Awareness Day in Lake Travis: Locals and Businesses Making a Difference

Written by Cathy Hale | April 2, 2016

Light It Up Blue

As the mom of an autistic kiddo and a resident of Lake Travis, I can honestly say that in my experience “awareness” is as simple as having a conversation. If you wear blue today and it sparks a chat about how autism has affected your life or your friend’s life or the lives of your neighbors, then you’re making a difference.

Why wear blue today?

It’s World Autism Awareness Day and the global “Light It Up Blue” initiative will have skyscrapers glowing blue and people wearing blue from coast-to-coast and around the world to promote autism awareness.

Wearing blue does not cure the sadness, confusion, frustration and anxiety that goes along with autism, but it does shine a light on the hope, gratitude and acceptance. Yes, there can be a bright side to autism.

Lake Travis Gets Drained by a Fish

Written by Todd Hower | April 1, 2016

Rumors started circulating early Thursday morning that a rare fish had been caught near the low water crossing on Lake Austin.

The fish in question is the once thought to be extinct yellow-bellied sucker fish. A relative to the threatened blue sucker fish, but not to be confused with the yellow-bellied sapsucker.

Long before Mansfield Dam had been constructed, the yellow-bellied sucker thrived in the swift waters of the Colorado River.

The yellow-bellied sucker needs cooler water temperatures and a steady current to spawn and survive. So it was shortly after the completion of Mansfield Dam in 1942 that sightings of the fish were rare. By 1944, it was believed that the yellow-bellied sucker fish had gone extinct.

That was until early this morning.

Lost in Spicewood, Found across Lake Travis in Lago Vista: The Story of Lisha

Written by Sandra Spicher | March 10, 2016

LeonardsAndLisha

Spicewood residents David and Beverly Leonard were walking Lisha, their rescued Black Mouth Cur mix, when she bolted into the brush after a deer. Four-year-old Lisha didn’t come back right away, so the Leonards took action.

They made flyers and put them up all over the neighborhood and at local businesses like Lee’s Almost By the Lake. Over the next few days they probably logged “about a thousand miles,” Beverly says, searching on foot and on the road — desperate to find the youngest member of their family.
