Austin Yacht Club: Sailing on Lake Travis Since 1952

Written by Cathy Hale | June 11, 2015

If the words “yacht club” conjure up images of Thurston Howell III from Gilligan’s Island in a yachting cap and ascot, well, you’re not alone.

Yachting very well may be misconstrued as a stuffy pastime, but not at Austin Yacht Club. This laid-back Lake Travis gem has been serving up serious sailing since 1952.

Austin Yacht Club is just a few miles off of RR 620 and Hudson Bend Road. If you follow the bright green scenery past Infamous Brewing Company and the neighborhoods of Travis Landing and Lakeland Hills, you’ll discover AYC on your right at the end of Beacon Road sitting on 30 acres with wet and dry slip storage.

Lake Travis Area Park Guide: Mansfield Dam Park

Written by Todd Hower | May 21, 2015

Mansfield Dam Park

Mansfield Dam is one of the more popular parks in the Lake Travis area. Because of its location on the main body of Lake Travis, it serves as one of the primary access points for those of you who enjoy rolling your boat into the water every now then.

But the ability to launch your boat on Lake Travis has been limited to only a few options. For the past several years, the public boat ramp at Mansfield Dam has not been one of them.

A pattern of consistent rain in the Lake Travis area has brought the lake up to just above 634 feet — a water level we haven’t seen in nearly three years!

How Much Rain Do We Really Need to Help Lake Travis?

Written by Cathy Hale | May 14, 2015

While the recent stormy weather may be wreaking havoc on outdoor weddings, festivals and baseball playoffs, and the tornado warnings have been unsettling, it’s filling up lakes throughout the state of Texas. Yesterday Austin got more than an inch of rain in only three hours.

Sure, it’s not the “Rain Bomb” of Memorial Day in 1981, when we got 11 inches of rain in three hours, but hey, it’s better than nothing. Plus, Camp Mabry has already observed more than five inches of rain in May which is more than we we typically get all month. That’s good news.

So how much rain would it actually take to fill the lake? Experts have said a major storm system or a series of storm systems could definitely do the trick.

Lake Travis Summer Camp Series: Science, Hobbies & Sports

Written by Cathy Hale | May 6, 2015

It’s time for Part 2 of our Summer Camp Series! Last week, we wrote about the wonderful art, dance, music and theater camps at places like Paiyh Dance Studios, TexARTS, Painting with a Twist, Color Me Mine, The Musicians Woodshed, Lakeway Activity Center and more.

This week, it’s all about Science, Hobbies & Sports! We found classes that range from toddlers to teens and run the gamut from cooking and sewing to exploring space, building robots and creating video games. If your kids are looking for room to roam, bounce, tumble, “nutmeg,” ride, race, ski or sail, don’t worry, we’ve got ya covered. (Whew!)

You’ll find cool camps from Avila Creative Soccer, Austin Yacht Club, Sail & Ski, Rolly Pollies, MyTime Fit Gym, Bee Creek Riding Center and Lakeway Activity Center (City of Lakeway), but as we said last week, despite our best efforts, we know this isn’t a comprehensive list of ALL of the great summer camps in the area. If we’ve missed one you love, please share it in the comments section on the Lake Travis Lifestyle Facebook page.
