Recreational activities aside, the Lake Travis area is home to all manner of athletes, including various championship teams at the high school level. Among them is the Lake Travis High School football program which boasts six state titles.

Leaving Lake Travis for Fall Camping in the Hill Country

Written by Tiffini Brock | November 12, 2015

Guadalupe River Camping CC Bendini

It’s the most wonderful time of the year! But we are not talking about mall Santa and fruitcake … at least not yet.

We are talking about camping season.

The weather is dropping from scorching to “ahhhhh” temperatures and it’s time to stock the cooler, pack up that tent, grab your sleeping bag and get out for a weekend of fall camping in the Hill Country.

We put together some of the best Hill Country campsites that are within a couple of hours drive time from the Lake Travis area. You’ll be far enough away from home to wind down and experience a sky filled with Hill Country stars … but you won’t have to spend half of your day on the road trying to get there.

From Austin to Lake Travis and Back on Austin Biplane

Written by Todd Hower | November 5, 2015

Lake Travis from Austin Biplane

It’s hard not to imagine being a young pilot on a mission during World War II as the plane taxis down the runway.

Only five feet out in front of the windshield, the wooden propeller lets out a series of whumps. As you pick up speed, the wind begins to swirl in the open-cockpit.

The sound of the engine chugs then roars as 300 hundred horsepower levels the nose of the plane. And then, the feeling of flight.

After a quick bank to the right, the view of downtown Austin comes into sight and you realize this is not World War II — you are a passenger in the open-cockpit of the red biplane. Behind you and in control of the plane is Robert Whiteside, Owner and Operating Pilot of Austin Biplane.

Lake Travis Lifestyle Day Trip to the Birthplace of Lyndon B. Johnson

Written by Mandy Spivey | November 4, 2015

Stonewall, Texas

You don’t have to travel very far around Central Texas before you find the many historic buildings tied to Texas-born President Lyndon Baines Johnson.

As the 36th leader of the United States, he made huge strides in transforming a nation in the way of education, civil rights and poverty, leaving behind a brightly glowing legacy and park that serves in his memory.

The Texas Hill Country is still home to LBJ and his early family, starting in Stonewall just on the edge of Johnson City. Here is where you’ll find Lyndon B. Johnson State Park & Historic Site, the birthplace and early living space for the future Senator and President.

Lake Travis Lifestyle Day Trip to One of the Littlest Towns in Texas: Luckenbach

Written by Mandy Spivey | October 19, 2015

Welcome to Luckenbach

Some places I visit in Texas feel like such a time warp. In my travels as a writer, I get to see all types of towns in Texas, each of them with their own unique flair and history.

One of the coolest places on the map in my book is Luckenbach, Texas. Just a short and scenic drive out in Fredericksburg’s direction, this tiny cowpoke town, with a recorded population of 3, attracts some of the biggest voices in country from around the Hill Country.

Having an appreciation for country music will get you further around these parts, where names like Jerry Jeff Walker, Waylon Jennings and Willie Nelson have graced the stage for guitar and singing performances. Those are the famed nights that locals remember, memories that echo in the walls of the well-waxed dance hall that now houses weekend acts.

Located 13 miles from Fredericksburg, south of U.S. Highway 290 and on the south side of RM 1376, this site, once known for being a Comanche trading post, now serves as the Hill Country’s exclusive hideaway for music lovers and those looking to get away from the glittering city lights for an evening.
