Outdoor Recreation in the Lake Travis Area

Austinites are known for their health-conscious attitudes, and the communities surrounding Lake Travis are no different.

You can always spot cyclists and runners in the area, whether in neighborhoods or even on the more busy roadways. You'd almost have to work at not being active considering the many miles of hiking and biking trails, swimming spots and array of outdoor activities that can be enjoyed all year long.

Recreational activities aside, the Lake Travis area is home to all manner of athletes, including various championship teams at the high school level. Among them is the Lake Travis High School football program which boasts six state titles.

But you don't have to be in training for a marathon to enjoy the great outdoors in the Lake Travis area. Check out some of the Lake Travis area outdoor activities you and your family can start enjoying today.

AguaFit: Boogie-Woogie Plunge at Point Venture Pool

Written by Sandra Spicher | May 4, 2016

Point Venture Pool Agua Fit

The clear blue expanse of Point Venture pool looks like it might be chilly. Dip a toe, gently slide in, or dunk yourself. After marching across the pool just once, the water temperature feels just right.

Armed with a dazzling smile, a waterproof Bluetooth speaker, and some props, Point Venture resident Linda Lewis guides the AguaFit workout with original choreography.

Mercer Street Dance Hall in Dripping Springs

Travel out of the Lake Travis area and head a little ways south and west to the place where Highways 12 and 290 intersect.

You’ll find yourself in the city of Dripping Springs. This seemingly sleepy community — also known as the “Gateway to the Hill Country” — is home to so many cool things to do, both adult and family-friendly. Who knew, right?!

Exotic Resort Zoo: Take a Guided Safari Tour in Texas

Written by Emily O'Shaughnessy | March 22, 2016

Exotic Resort Zoo

Load up the family and take a mini road trip to the Exotic Resort Zoo in Johnson City. It’s about an hour out of town — depending on where you live in the Lake Travis area — but truly a world away.

The Exotic Resort Zoo is located on 137 acres with over 500 animals and 80 different species. The highlight is the guided safari tour, where you ride around the property in a large open but covered trailer. You can buy buckets of feed at the gift shop, which I highly recommend (they are large enough to share).

The tour takes about 45 minutes, and our guide did a wonderful job of telling us about the animals as we meandered through the grounds.

Strawberry Picking at Sweet Berry Farm

Written by Emily O'Shaughnessy | March 8, 2016

Sweet Berry Farms

Sweet Berry Farm in Marble Falls is a favorite local excursion. My family loves to go in the fall for the pumpkin patch and the gorgeous flowers, but we had never made it in the spring to pick the berries.

That seemed wrong, considering it is called “Sweet Berry” after all. So when I heard that the strawberries were ripe and ready for pickin’ we loaded up the kids and headed that way.

My kids love strawberries and also love to pick things growing in the ground (more than once we’ve had to apologize over a picked flower from a well-manicured garden). So I knew they’d be thrilled when they were not only allowed to, but encouraged to pick something! I was right. They were in heaven!

Lake Austin Spa Resort: A World-Class Getaway Close to Home

Written by Elaine Heng | March 1, 2016

Lake Austin Spa

Take a drive through Steiner Ranch. All the way down to Mary Quinlan Park on Lake Austin … but don’t drive into Lake Austin. You’re right next to one of the top 25 resorts in the United States.

But it wasn’t always this way. Fishing camp. Nudist camp. Rodeo training camp. Reducing Resort? The history of Lake Austin Spa Resort is a colorful one. Now it’s a place that Conde Nast Traveler simply calls, a “little piece of heaven” in the Texas Hill Country.
