Outdoor Recreation in the Lake Travis Area

Austinites are known for their health-conscious attitudes, and the communities surrounding Lake Travis are no different.

You can always spot cyclists and runners in the area, whether in neighborhoods or even on the more busy roadways. You'd almost have to work at not being active considering the many miles of hiking and biking trails, swimming spots and array of outdoor activities that can be enjoyed all year long.

Recreational activities aside, the Lake Travis area is home to all manner of athletes, including various championship teams at the high school level. Among them is the Lake Travis High School football program which boasts six state titles.

But you don't have to be in training for a marathon to enjoy the great outdoors in the Lake Travis area. Check out some of the Lake Travis area outdoor activities you and your family can start enjoying today.

Gardening in the Lake Travis Area: The Natural Gardener

Written by Emily O'Shaughnessy | November 27, 2013

The Natural Gardener, located on Old Bee Caves Road, is a world-class nursery right here in the Lake Travis area. To say it’s a place to buy plants and fertilizer would, naturally, be accurate – but The Natural Gardener is so much more than just a garden store. It’s truly a destination full of educational and inspiring things.

It’s the kind of place you could easily spend hours wandering the 8-acre grounds and admiring natural beauty at every turn. There is something for everyone, and kids (and dogs!) are welcome. In fact, it’s a great place to bring children to help them gain an appreciation of nature and gardening from an early age. There are plenty of things to keep them entertained, including a butterfly garden, live animals including goats and chickens, a labyrinth made out of rocks, a teepee and several swings on the property.

Indoor Soccer Training in the Lake Travis Area: The Avila Method

Written by Cathy Hale | November 21, 2013

Soccer is alive and well in Lakeway thanks to the vision of Eryck Avila, owner and trainer at Avila Soccer. If you haven’t heard about this amazing training facility located in Lakeway, you’re in for a treat. From the mini Cristiano Ronaldo who is perfecting his “nutmeg” to the greenest soccer newbie, all levels are welcome at Avila Soccer.

Not only is the location convenient to Lake Travis area residents, it’s indoor, which means on the hottest of summer days, you’ll be comfy and cool. This is a great option for families with smaller children who may need a break from the summer heat or want to continue training indoors when things cool down a bit. Plus, Avila offers soccer clubs (Lonestar, Dynamo, Lake Travis, PAYSL, Town and Country), camps and leagues for children and adults all year.

Bee Cave Sculpture Park – A Vision Comes To Life

Written by Emily O'Shaughnessy | November 11, 2013

The Bee Cave Sculpture Park opened its first phase with a grand opening and ribbon cutting ceremony on Saturday. It was the perfect way to introduce a beautiful new park to the community.

This park is truly a hidden gem, tucked behind the Police Department near the Galleria shops. The large, 7-acre natural area with enormous oak tress and a pond somehow seems a world away. Wandering through the paths admiring the sculptures you’d never know there’s a shopping center just a stones throw away. It’s a mini escape – a convenient place for residents and visitors of Bee Cave to enjoy nature and art in one beautiful setting.

The Bee Cave Arts Foundation worked for years to bring this vision to life, and as I heard several times on Saturday, “this is only the beginning.” The Sculpture Park currently includes 11 sculptures, some permanent and some rotating, with plans already in the works for Phase II. A playground designed by artist GiGi Miller, whose colorful “Leap of Faith” frog sculpture is a hit with the kids, will be visually appealing with vibrant colors and whimsical touches.
