Outdoor Recreation in the Lake Travis Area

Austinites are known for their health-conscious attitudes, and the communities surrounding Lake Travis are no different.

You can always spot cyclists and runners in the area, whether in neighborhoods or even on the more busy roadways. You'd almost have to work at not being active considering the many miles of hiking and biking trails, swimming spots and array of outdoor activities that can be enjoyed all year long.

Recreational activities aside, the Lake Travis area is home to all manner of athletes, including various championship teams at the high school level. Among them is the Lake Travis High School football program which boasts six state titles.

But you don't have to be in training for a marathon to enjoy the great outdoors in the Lake Travis area. Check out some of the Lake Travis area outdoor activities you and your family can start enjoying today.

Texas Ski Ranch Snowpark: Snowboarding and Tubing Texas Style

Texas Ski Ranch Snow Park

Finding snow in the Lake Travis area is not easy. You may have visited the Hill Country Galleria for a snow day in December, but busting out a snowboard or skis to get warmed up before your spring skiing trip to the mountains is not happening. Until now … there’s a place not too far from here that you can make some turns or take the kids tubing. The Texas Ski Ranch in New Braunfels opened up a new feature this past summer — the TSR Snowpark.

You can get there by jumping on I-35 and heading south, or if you’re traveling from the Lake Travis area there’s the option to take the scenic route without adding too much time. Take the road less traveled for this Lake Travis area excursion by following Hamilton Pool Road to Hwy 12, head into Wimberley and through Dripping Springs.

Lake Travis Area Parks Guide: Lakeway City Park

Written by Emily O'Shaughnessy | February 12, 2014

Lakeway City Park

The Lake Travis area is blessed with many wonderful outdoor spaces, and Lakeway City Park is one of my favorites. At 64 acres it’s a huge area with plenty of options for all ages and interests.

My favorite thing about Lakeway City Park is the large paved path that loops around the park. Because it’s away from busy streets and usually not too crowded it was perfect when my daughters first learned to ride their bikes. They could practice wobbling while I jogged alongside. It’s a scenic path, and at any time you’ll likely see joggers, walkers, pets and families enjoying the sights along the 1+ mile loop.

Lake Travis Area Excursion: Austin Zoo and Animal Sanctuary

Written by Emily O'Shaughnessy | January 24, 2014

Deer at the Austin Zoo

The Austin Zoo and Animal Sanctuary is unique and different than other zoos—in a good way. Of course they have most of the animals you’d expect to see at a zoo—monkeys, bears, big cats, reptiles, birds and more. But the Austin Zoo is more than just a place to view animals. It’s a non-profit dedicated to assisting animals through rescue, rehabilitation and education. Many of the animals come from bad situations, and the zoo provides them a healthy, happy forever home. The animals are well-loved and cared for and it shows.

Running Free: Lake Travis Area Dog Parks

Lake Travis Area Dog Parks

Sometimes you just need to get your dog out of the house, out of the yard, and give him the space to run and get social with other pooches. If you live in an apartment or condominium without a yard, you’ll likely find that Lake Travis area dog parks will become regular destinations for both you and your furry friend.

Our dog Moses has been to many dog parks in Austin and around the Lake Travis area, so I think he is a pretty good judge of which ones are winners. We are lucky to live close by a couple of his favorites — the dog parks in Lakeway and Bee Cave.

Thinkery: The New Austin Children’s Museum

Written by Emily O'Shaughnessy | January 9, 2014

The Thinkery

If you haven’t made a trip to the Thinkery yet it’s a definite on the to-do list with kids.

The new Austin children’s museum, which opened December 7th in the Mueller Town Center District, replaces the previous downtown museum. It’s bigger, better and full of interesting, educational and fun activities for kids of all ages.

I love the new location. We had no problems parking on a nearby street, but free parking is also available at the nearby Mueller Town Center parking garage.

The modern, state-of-the-art building sits next to an open field with ample outdoor space, including a small pond and really cool outdoor playground.
