Joy to the Weird: Austin's Best Tacky Lights

Written by Mandy Spivey | December 23, 2014

Austin Tacky Lights

It’s a yearly tradition in my family to venture out on Christmas Eve to see our town’s best Christmas lights. Over the years, I have had the chance to witness and view some of the most colorful and sometimes outrageous light displays around Texas, in Dallas and Austin alike.

Living near Lake Travis has put a fun spin on outdoor decorating, and like anything in Austin, it’s going to be a little on the weird side. When it’s time to grab the winter coats and head out for an evening of taking in Christmas’ electric glory, it’s always more fun to have a welcoming and well-decorated neighborhood to visit! That’s why this year I’m officially on the hunt for Austin’s best tacky lights, near and far.

If you haven’t made it to Lake Travis’ favorite farm destination — Sweet Berry Farm — you have a couple of days left. Sweet Berry Farm’s ‘Harvest the Fall Fun’ season closes to the public this weekend until March 2015. There are still cute little pumpkins left, but supply is limited. However; have no fear! There’s plenty of fun things to do aside from pumpkin pickin’.

Lake Travis Area Pumpkin Patches

Pumpkin patches of Lake Travis

The Lake Travis area has its fair share of pumpkins for purchase, and whether you’re in the market for the perfect piece for carving or want to get your fall-themed pictures for the Halloween season, there’s no better place to search for one.

I took an afternoon to visit the orange patches, some with rows filled with hundreds of pumpkins, some in huge stacks waiting to be bought — some even decorating vintage bath tubs in the lawn.

With only a little more than a week left until Halloween, it’s time to get out there and find your perfect pumpkin. There are still plenty of shapes at sizes to find at these local pumpkin patches in the Lake Travis area.

Lake Travis Area Parks Guide: Founders Memorial Park in Dripping Springs

Written by Mandy Spivey | September 8, 2014

Founders Memorial Park playground

Getting out to discover and explore the open spaces of the Lake Travis area is a great reminder of how many amazing parks we have to take in nature, get a little bit of exercise and take the little ones out for a day in the sunshine.

In the quaint community of Dripping Springs is Founders Memorial Park, located off Ranch Road 12 just north of Highway 290. I came across this park in my Hill Country travels when I was in search of several of the area’s breweries and noticed the entrance just outside downtown Dripping Springs. After a scenic drive down the winding road into the park, you’ll be greeted with colorful playscapes, a large outdoor pool and several public football fields.
