Sail and Ski Center: Final Days for Spring Break Snow Sports Sale

Written by Todd Hower | March 28, 2014

Sail and Ski Austin Sale

Spring break for the Lake Travis area is over and let’s hope this long cold winter is over too!

You may be returning from a recent ski trip in the mountains and buying snow sports gear is the last thing on your mind. It’s kind of like buying Christmas decorations the day after Christmas. You know there are some great deals, but it’s really hard to buy something knowing that when you get home, you’re going to store it in the attic or a closet for a year before using it for the first time.

But just like after Christmas sales, now is the time for the best deals as the Lake Travis area sporting good stores get rid of their winter inventory. You won’t have to worry about scrambling before next years ski vacation to find a new jacket — and you won’t have to pay top dollar either!

One of the best sales in the area has been happening at Sail and Ski Center. They have a location in Lakeway but the spring break snow sports sale is at the Austin location only. They carry everything you need for a ski vacation in the mountains including skis, snowboards, boots, jackets, pants, helmets, gloves, long underwear and more — is this starting to remind you of how much gear you need for a ski vacation?

Fab’rik: Keeping Lake Travis Fashionistas Stylish

Written by Cathy Hale | January 7, 2014

You could say Fab’rik is a popular national franchise with a huge local presence. From the pages of Austin Monthly to the catwalks at local fashion shows and galas, looks from Fab’rik can be spotted all over Austin including the Lake Travis area. Since the Hill Country Galleria opened its doors, Lake Travis fashionistas have enjoyed shopping at Fab’rik. This boutique offers everything a gal needs from the perfect cocktail dress for a night on the town to cute threads for a laid back weekend.

One of the great things about shopping at Fab’rik is the lack of sticker shock. You may have seen it on the runway, but you won’t be paying runway prices. Part of the concept of Fab’rik is offering stylish clothes under $100, except items in their denim collection. (But hey, any Citizens of Humanity enthusiast understands that, right!?)

If you see the perfect silky blouse in that amazing emerald green color or the to-die-for peplum top you’ve just gotta have, get it while it lasts. Fab’rik offers a great selection of items, but once it’s gone, it’s gone. This is good news for shoppers because chances are you won’t see every gal in Lake Travis wearing the exact same piece. Fab’rik can help you build a wardrobe within your price range and that wardrobe will be unique. If you need a little bit of help finding the right fit or the best way to buy functional pieces, Fab’rik offers stylist services as well.

Lake Travis Area Excursions: Wimberley Market Days

Written by Mandy Spivey | December 9, 2013

Wimberley Market Days

Lake Travis and the Texas Hill Country are home to some of the most quaint and colorful towns around. One of my favorite towns to visit, not just for their art and their history, is Wimberley. Located in Hays County between San Marcos and Dripping Springs on RR 12, this short excursion is about a thirty minute drive from Lakeway and a perfect place to take a day trip.

This past Saturday was the last Wimberley Market Day to take place until early next Spring. The daylong flea market, which runs from March thru December on the first Saturday of each month from 7 a.m.- 4 p.m., is orchestrated by the local Lions Club and has been a staple of Wimberley life since 1964 when the first vendors set up shop out of the back of their trucks in the Town Square.

After just a few short years, the crowds grew and so did the list of vendors wishing to sell their goods, so land was purchased in the 1970s off RR 2325 and the Market was moved to where it sits today.

Ugly Christmas Sweater Party Ideas

Written by Emily O'Shaughnessy | December 6, 2013

ugly sweater

This holiday season there’s a good chance you’ll have an excuse to don an ugly Christmas sweater. Whether you’re invited to a party or perhaps just want to celebrate National Ugly Christmas Sweater Day  to humor yourself, it’s fun to break out the ugly gear. However, if “ugly” (or “tacky” – they go by both) isn’t typically your style, or you’re not sure where to start but want to be a good sport, here are some tips to get you started….

Think thrift store – Thrift stores are the perfect places to begin your search for tacky sweaters, many straight from the 80’s. They’ll be authentic, and the more obnoxious the better. Patterns, sequins, shoulder pads, cheesy phrases, whatever you can find. However, I’ve noticed that these sweaters are getting harder and harder to find at thrift and resale shops. These days ugly sweaters are all the rage, so there’s a good chance someone beat you to the punch and scooped up all the good ones. If your trip to Goodwill leaves you empty handed don’t fret – there are other options.

Borrow – Ask around and I bet one of your friends or neighbors has one lying around. Or better yet, ask a Grandma. You might want to be delicate with this, though. Don’t ask to borrow her “ugly” Christmas sweater. Maybe just mention you have a festive event coming up – then promise to have it dry-cleaned afterwards? After all, nobody wants to hurt Grandma’s feelings. Then again, your cool Grandma may be going to an ugly sweater party herself (sorry, hipsters, it’s not just you!), so she may not be willing to part with hers anyway.
