Moviehouse and Eatery: Dinner and a Movie Are Easy

Written by Todd Hower | April 20, 2015

Moviehouse & Eatery
Going out to the movies used to be a pretty straightforward process with limited choices. Get to the show and buy your tickets, grab an overpriced combo of popcorn and soda, find a seat. And you can still do that.

Or you can take your movie experience to the next level. The Moviehouse and Eatery is the best place for dinner and a movie in the Lake Travis area. It’s time to leave the cooking and cleaning to someone else! Enjoy the show as you kick back in your fully adjustable leather recliner and let the full service wait staff bring your choice of food and yummy cocktails right out to your seat.

Crystal Creek Moonshine in Spicewood: Not Your Grandpa's Moonshine

Written by Mandy Spivey | April 15, 2015

A few moonshine staples at Crystal Creek

There are a lot of misconceptions out there about the distilled drink, moonshine. I, for one, thought most of it is made in bath tubs (not true … these days that is). If you avoid drinking it for fear of going blind — that would be a more popular anecdote for the drink, too. But a lot has changed in the moonshine distillation game in the last few years.

Essentially moonshine is high-proof spirits that are made at home in small quantities — sometimes illicitly. In the past and in the early 1800s many farmers made their living distilling moonshine or “white whiskey” in the Appalachian area. Corn farmers could turn their crop into a more valuable item, and cut down on shipping costs in the process. But a lot of fermenting and early distilling was done under the cover of darkness to keep their operations secret.

Dripping Springs Vodka: Let the Flavors Linger

Written by Mandy Spivey | April 7, 2015

Dripping Springs Vodka

Around Lake Travis, we have a literal collection of some of the best micro-breweries in Texas. Some Saturdays I realize how lucky I am to be able to grab a familiar pint glass and head out to the breezy Texas Hill Country to some of the newest up-and-coming brew houses, like Jester King, Solid Rock Brewing or Thirsty Planet Brewing Company.

Some days call for a nice cool beer, and others necessitate a different type of drink. Say hello to Kevin Kelleher from Dripping Springs Vodka.

While hosts of other distillers are busy filtering all of their tastes out of their vodkas and gins, Kelleher is ready to serve thirsty drinkers with a totally different approach. To let the impurities (shorthand for “flavors” in distilling terms) linger, and let your taste buds do the deciding.

Easter Brunch 2015: Lake Travis and Beyond

Written by Todd Hower | March 31, 2015

Peeps Easter Bunnies

Do you remember as a kid waking up early on Easter Sunday and searching all over the house for your Easter basket filled with chocolate rabbits, jelly beans and those weird marshmallow bunnies coated with pink sugar?

April 5th is Easter Sunday!

It’s a popular time to eat Cadbury Creme Eggs and Peeps Bunnies at 6:00am, put on your Sunday best, go to church and go out for Easter Brunch.

And for that reason, we put together our annual list of places to go for Easter Brunch. Most are here in the Lake Travis area, but a few are a bit further away — included because they’re well worth the drive.

From eggs and bacon and mimosas on a patio overlooking Lake Travis to the all-you-can-eat-buffet with brisket and live gospel music. Wherever you decide, make your reservation early, as this is one of the more popular days for families and visitors to enjoy Sunday brunch.

Apis Restaurant & Apiary is Buzzing in Spicewood

Written by Cathy Hale | March 30, 2015

Apis Restaurant

We’re always looking for cool concepts and interesting businesses in the Texas Hill Country and there’s one in particular that’s creating a buzz — and we mean that literally! Apis Restaurant and Apiary in Spicewood.

The husband and wife team of Chef Taylor Hall and Casie Hall had a unique vision for this rustic, yet refined restaurant that included a functional honey house.

They wanted to not only serve globally-inspired seasonal dishes, but also use locally-sourced ingredients like honey from their own hives. Hence the name of the restaurant Apis, which comes from the taxonomy of the western honeybee, Apis mellifera.
