Every now and then you stumble across a hidden gem that you know will become a big part of your life.

The Rusty Mule, located at 9201 US-290 between Oak Hill and Dripping Springs, is that diamond in the rough.

Folks that have been out there will immediately begin to sing its praises when The Rusty Mule is mentioned in conversations, convincing those who haven’t been yet to put it on their “places to go” list.

Oasis Texas Brewing Company: Session Beers on Lake Travis

Written by Mandy Spivey | June 12, 2014

Oasis Brewing

High atop the third floor patio overlooking scenic Lake Travis sits Oasis Texas Brewing Company, an up-and-coming brewery that is right in our own backyard.

In the same space that Billy’s Brew & Que used to smoke up and serve some of the area’s best barbeque, OTBC now seeks to offer some of the best summer beers to Texans.

The name of the game here is session beer, light yet satisfying brews with a lower alcohol content and plenty of room for a dash of creativity in the brewing process. This is where the brewers step in, each offering their own unique set of brewing abilities to bring life to these new lakeside refreshments.

Hudson's on the Bend: Happy Hour in Lake Travis

Written by Mandy Spivey | June 2, 2014

Hudson's on the Bend Happy Hour

You gotta love a good happy hour. Indeed, as the old saying goes, “It’s 5 o’clock somewhere!”

When 5pm rolls around, not only am I usually in need of some rest and downtime, but that is around the time that my late lunch wears off and my hunger begins to rear its ugly head. That’s why the happy hour specials at Hudson’s on the Bend are just so tempting after a day spent shuffling files in front of the computer.

Monday through Friday from 5-7 pm, Hudson’s on the Bend Happy Hour is not something to be missed. It’s a great stop if you’re on your way home (and ready to get out of traffic for a while), or just needing an early evening snack to keep you going.

Cafe Blue: Fresh Seafood in Lake Travis

Written by Todd Hower | March 18, 2014

Cafe Blue

This is one of those places that I would usually save for a date night, but after a family day of shoe shopping at the Hill Country Galleria and a craving for oysters, it was decided (by the adults) that we were going to have a family date night at Cafe Blue.

I called to see if there was a wait and even though it was a busy Saturday night, they were able to have a table ready for us within 20 minutes. So we wrapped up our shoe shopping at Dick’s Sporting Goods and headed over to Cafe Blue.

Our kids seemed to be getting into what my daughter calls her food mood (which is not a mood you want to be around). As we were deciding on an adult beverage, our server was very keen to recognize the situation. He brought out a loaf of warm bread with butter to take care of our “starving” children and asked if they could get something started for the kids.

The etch-a-sketch on the backside of the kids menu kept them occupied until the food arrived. Because I didn’t think of Cafe Blue as a family-friendly restaurant, it was all unexpected — but extremely refreshing.

Jack Allen's Kitchen: Oak Hill or Round Rock … it's worth the drive

Written by Emily O'Shaughnessy | February 14, 2014

Jack Allen's Kitchen

Last weekend my husband had a birthday and he got to pick the restaurant. No surprise, he opted for Jack Allen’s Kitchen in Oak Hill. We both love that place and visit any chance we get. If you’ve never been I highly recommend it. Jack Allen’s has plenty of good things going for it.

First off, the food is delicious and locally sourced. Their tagline “Local in Source. Texan in Spirit” says a lot. Jack Allen’s gets most of its ingredients from farms right here in the state. They work hard to build relationships with and support local purveyors, and their commitment to fresh ingredients makes a difference. The dishes are interesting, delicious and not the same old, same old stuff you find everywhere. Each evening they offer a special in addition to their regular menu. They also have plenty of local wines and spirits, and start each meal with a small, complimentary appetizer of pimiento cheese and flatbread crackers. Tasty stuff.
