This is one of those places that I would usually save for a date night, but after a family day of shoe shopping at the Hill Country Galleria and a craving for oysters, it was decided (by the adults) that we were going to have a family date night at Cafe Blue.
I called to see if there was a wait and even though it was a busy Saturday night, they were able to have a table ready for us within 20 minutes. So we wrapped up our shoe shopping at Dick’s Sporting Goods and headed over to Cafe Blue.
Our kids seemed to be getting into what my daughter calls her food mood (which is not a mood you want to be around). As we were deciding on an adult beverage, our server was very keen to recognize the situation. He brought out a loaf of warm bread with butter to take care of our “starving” children and asked if they could get something started for the kids.
The etch-a-sketch on the backside of the kids menu kept them occupied until the food arrived. Because I didn’t think of Cafe Blue as a family-friendly restaurant, it was all unexpected — but extremely refreshing.
After the kids settled in our order of a dozen oysters arrived. We went with a mixed bag of oysters from the Gulf and Northeast that included Blue Point — they were all delicious.
Although the menu has a variety of salads, steaks, pasta, burgers and sandwiches, when you think about eating at Cafe Blue, you’re most likely thinking seafood — like Texas Redfish or fresh Ahi Tuna. We enjoyed a wonderful main course that was fresh, properly prepared and served hot.
Items on the dessert menu were tempting, but we passed and opted for a glass of wine instead.
Cafe Blue is definitely a great place to go for a date night or a special night with a large group of friends, but you shouldn’t be afraid to give this place a try if you happen to be dining out with the little ones.
The kids menu is filled with the usual suspects like mac and cheese, chicken, and pizza. All the items are served with a side of fruit, fries and a drink. It will set you back about $6.50 which isn’t too bad nowadays for a kids meal that includes a drink. It’s the perfect place for a special family date night!
If you’re a fan of eating oysters — but not a fan of the cost — don’t miss the Cafe Blue happy hour featuring half-priced select oysters on the half shell. You can also enjoy half-priced peel and eat shrimp, and half-priced drink specials. Happy hour is all day Monday and 3p to 6p Tuesday to Friday.
