The Quality of New Homes in the Lake Travis Area

Written by Todd Hower | September 19, 2013

New Home Construction

People from all over the country are finding their way to Texas and many of them are settling down in Austin. The city of Austin reports 115 people are moving to the Austin area every day; 45 into the city limits. That leaves 70 people a day looking outside of the city and the Lake Travis area has been a hot spot on the relocation radar.

The last time new home construction in the Lake Travis area experienced this kind of demand was back in 2006. You could drive through the new residential developments and see 50 to 100 homes going up. Land was being cleared, slabs were getting poured, and it seemed like framing crews were slapping up houses overnight.

When the market experienced the meltdown, demand for new construction and resale homes in the Lake Travis area came to a screeching halt. Driving through the areas that were planned for new development was like driving through a ghost town. The construction jobs dried up and a large number of workers left the area, or even the country, in search of other work.

A Comedy Show Coming to the Lake Travis Area

Written by Todd Hower | September 18, 2013

cnight2

It’s not often that we get to experience a comedy show in the Lake Travis area. So, I wanted to let my fellow Lake Travis area fans of funny know about a comedy show coming to Bee Cave.

You may have been to a concert at The Backyard, but what about a comedy show? If you are a fan of funny, this is a comedy show in the Lake Travis area that you don’t want to miss. This event is put on by Gold’s Gym in Bee Caves and features three of the funniest comics in Austin. If you’re fans of any of these folks, grab tickets quick. The Glenn Theatre can sell out fast when hilarity hits the radar.

Want to learn more about Comedy Night at The Glen Theatre? Well, here’s the scoop directly from the event page:

Matt Sadler has been performing comedy for over 18 years. Headlining around the world in dozens of countries, his machine-gun delivery has entertained all over Canada, the Caribbean, and in performances for U.S. troops in Asia and the Middle East. He has appeared on Comedy Central, he’s been heard on NPR, and he was the winner of the HBO Talent Search as well as the Carnival Comedy Challenge. Most recently, he was on the Oddball Comedy Tour with Dave Chappelle and Flight of the Conchords.

Nancy Reed: “Sweet and salty, surprisingly wise for a wise-ass.” (Austin Chronicle) Both naughty and nice, Nancy’s a hoot!

From her ultra pierced and tattooed daughters now raising teens of their own, to her Mom dating much younger men, her life naturally leads to laughs. She’s unique woman that’s just as funny to the guys, as she is to the gals. A 25 yr. comedy veteran and past winner of “The Funniest Person in Austin Contest”, Nancy works with her buddies Ron White & Tommy Chong, and has traveled overseas to entertain our troops. Look for her new DVD “Yoga and Cigarettes” due to be released in August.

Tom Hester: Your host and M.C. and past winner of “the Funniest Person in Austin”. He was the #1 requested comic on XM Radio and has performed on NBC and has performed more than a 1000 shows in more that 7 countries world wide.

Thai Spice Lakeway – The Real Deal

Written by Todd Hower | September 17, 2013

Thai Spice

Thai Spice is one of the amazing places that is a solid Asian addition to the Lake Travis area food scene. The restaurant is located in the Lakeway Town Center II at the intersection of Lohmans Crossing and 620, across the parking lot from Mangieri’s Pizza. (map)

Thai Spice is on the corner of the shopping center, giving the restaurant a spread-out feeling and a sweet back dining patio. The bonus to the location on the end is having windows along the front, side, and rear of the restaurant to provide plenty of natural light.

With reasonable prices and a friendly environment, Thai Spice is the real deal. The owner and his family have been part of the Lake Travis community for over 10 years. They also have a second location in the Westlake area.

Thai Spice offers a huge variety of Thai dishes along with some fresh and flavorful Japanese options coming out of  the sushi bar. You can’t go wrong with the traditional Pad Thai or a bowl of Tom Ka soup. You’ll have plenty of rice and noodle options to choose from along with five different types of curries. The three pepper items are truly spicy!

Mountain Bikers, Hikers, and Evil Dogs

Written by Todd Hower | September 16, 2013

Evil Dog

On a recent mountain bike ride, a dog bit my foot! I was minding my own business riding down the trail when this evil dog came from the other direction and clamped onto my foot!

Now you might be thinking, here comes a rant complete with a new Lake Travis area Facebook Page — Mountain Bikers Against Unleashed Dogs and Owners.

Well … not today.
