Lake Travis Neighborhood Guide: The Hills of Lakeway

Written by Todd Hower | February 26, 2014

The Hills of Lakeway

People love this classic neighborhood and it’s one of the more established neighborhoods in the Lake Travis area. Weaving through the golf courses of The Hills Country Club and surrounded by the larger Lakeway community, The Hills is a beautiful and convenient place to call home. This gated community is popular with families, golf enthusiasts, vacationers and retirees.

History

The Hills of Lakeway, now designated as The Hills (or Village of The Hills), was originally in the extra-territorial jurisdiction of the City of Austin. The Hills became an incorporated city in Texas in May 1997. New construction is ongoing, along with remodeling, because you can find homes in the neighborhood with year built dates going back to the early 1980’s.

The Hills community is in the heart of Lakeway but considered a village. As a resident, you’ll have an exclusive address of “The Hills, Texas 78738” — designated by the The United States Post Office.

Lake Travis Area Neighborhood Guide: The Preserve at Lakeway

Written by Todd Hower | February 17, 2014

The Preserve at Lakeway

The Preserve at Lakeway is a modern-day Lake Travis area subdivision with homes built to suit your needs and mile-long views of the surrounding Balcones Canyonlands Preserve.

Living in this neighborhood makes you feel like you’re tucked away in the hills. The reality is that if you live here, you’re actually in the heart of Lakeway and surrounded by rare and endangered plant and animal species found nowhere else on earth. Not a bad place to be for the chance to commune closely with nature on a daily basis.

Texas Ski Ranch Snowpark: Snowboarding and Tubing Texas Style

Written by Todd Hower | February 13, 2014

Texas Ski Ranch Snow Park

Finding snow in the Lake Travis area is not easy. You may have visited the Hill Country Galleria for a snow day in December, but busting out a snowboard or skis to get warmed up before your spring skiing trip to the mountains is not happening. Until now … there’s a place not too far from here that you can make some turns or take the kids tubing. The Texas Ski Ranch in New Braunfels opened up a new feature this past summer — the TSR Snowpark.

You can get there by jumping on I-35 and heading south, or if you’re traveling from the Lake Travis area there’s the option to take the scenic route without adding too much time. Take the road less traveled for this Lake Travis area excursion by following Hamilton Pool Road to Hwy 12, head into Wimberley and through Dripping Springs.

Lake Travis Area History: Mansfield Dam and Lake Travis

Written by Todd Hower | February 11, 2014

Lake Travis 670 feet 2015

An afternoon spent boating with your family, riding the blue waters on a wake board, scuba diving down to the depths, sailing and watching the sun go down — these are all favorite pastimes of our beloved Lake Travis.

As the biggest water reservoir of the Highland Lakes, Lake Travis boasts activities for people of all lifestyles, and has served as home to thousands of Texans for the last century.

Residents are drawn to the open waters and the quieter pace of life that West Austin has to offer, but it’s easy to forget just how much our landscape has changed over the years … and just how much work went into creating our beloved Lake Travis.

The time was the turn of the century.

Austin was on the cusp of certain anticipated technological progress, and this included the use of dams to harness the area’s flooding rain waters for the purpose of hydroelectric power.

At the time, the land and lake that we call Lake Travis was but a big dream of big men. Senator Lyndon B. Johnson was at the forefront of the fight for hydroelectric power and the building of the seven dams that would eventually create the Highland Lakes of Central Texas.

How To Win a Free Gift Card from All Star Burger

All Star Burger—Eat a Better Burger

I’ve talked about All Star Burger before and I must admit … it’s not easy for me to stay away from this place. In fact, just the other day I stopped in during my lunch break to grab a bite. I never leave disappointed.

All Star Burger is the kind of place that is consistently good all around. Good food with friendly service is key, but I’m also talking about a place that supports local farms and vendors. From a variety of freshly made burgers, hand-dipped shakes, old school fries and farmers market salads; you can tell they really care about what’s behind the ingredients of each and every item on the menu. All Star Burger stands behind everything they make with a philosophy that starting with better ingredients is the key to making everything better.
