About Marjorie Vesper

Marjorie Vesper is a relative newbie to the Austin area, having hailed (most recently) from the Pacific Northwest. Mama to two kids who are cute 6 days of the week, she enjoys getting out anywhere Texan, and spends much time contemplating the ever critical, “what are we doing today?” In addition to writing up local info and explores, she works as a film critic and is an all-around boisterous Irish gal. Occasional and friendly rants can be found on Twitter @marjorievesper and via GotchaMovies. Cheers!

Lake Travis Water Usage: We Have Issues …

Written by Marjorie Vesper | May 31, 2016

There’s been a lot of hubbub lately in my neighborhood on the good ol’ fashioned use of sprinklers in a time when, frankly, we Lake Travis locals have seen a veritable poop-ton of rain.

You know the scene — you’re driving or rather floating down the street on your merry little way to H-E-B, waves of water slamming down on your windshield with tsunami force, when you see it. Sprinklers running full blast in the HOA common areas.

Your eye gets that funny little twitch of agitation which over time will result in a crease no amount of Botox can heal. This kind of waste really gets to you, and pounding fist on steering wheel you vow to raise a stink at the next board meeting darn it all.

But your annoyance over such an environmental (and monetary) slap in the face, grows to sheer panic as you realize that your very own sprinklers are likely going off. Right now.

Sometimes Island on Lake Travis: Good Riddance

Sometimes Island on Lake Travis

Snake Island.

Runit Islet.

Alcatraz.

It’s a sad but too true fact in the world of travel that not all islands are idyllic, coconut-sipping hotspots. Escapes from the daily grind, where sand is delightful in the toes and cocktails shade under paper umbrellas.

And while plenty of tourists still flock to less than desirable destinations — like those mentioned above — not many folks back home take the “wish you were here” postcard seriously. It’s more of a “better you than me” feeling.

Only slightly less famous (and a tad closer to home) is Sometimes Island, a strip of land which rises from the depths of a drought-ravaged Lake Travis anytime the sky decides to really dry up.

Since such meteorological events are a way of life in our grand Texas, the island no one really wants to see (or visit) has become a common sight for the way better part of a century.

Pride Inclusive Sports: Summer Camps for Kids of all Levels

Pride Inclusive Sports

Spring break is over — a now distant blur of vacay glory packed to overflow with sunscreen, great drinks and likely, whining kids.

But devoted (or perhaps panicked) parent that you are, you’ve already started thinking ahead to the biggest of all breaks — the mother if you will of school-free calendar days that stretch for miles — summer.

If you can swing it you’ll pack the car and ear plugs, load those cute rug-rats up and head somewhere fun a time or two over the long, hot void that is summer vacation.

But the smarty-pants parent that you are (and likely still panicked), you’ll also be looking to offer your brood some much-needed structure and activity to survive until school gears up once more come fall.

With living an active life pretty big in the Lake Travis area, programs and camps geared towards getting out and moving do well and book early for the kiddos. And though there are enough options and interests available to include “everyone,” inevitably someone always gets left out when it comes to sports recreation, no matter what season we’re in.
