Let’s Go to Luckenbach, Texas…

Written by Emily O'Shaughnessy | July 31, 2014

Luckenbach Texas

One of the best things about living in the Lake Travis area is the abundance of excursions you can take in the surrounding hill country. A short drive in any direction can make you feel like you’re in an entirely different world. Luckenbach, TX, is the perfect example. And if you love trailer food, wine, live music (or all of the above) this weekend presents a great opportunity to get back to the basics of love.

The first annual Hill Country Food Truck Festival takes place this Saturday, August 2nd from noon – 11:30pm in Luckenbach. Tickets are $15 per person, with kids 12 and under free. Trailer food, wine, beer and music will come together in this small, laid back hill country town.

Lake Travis Area Parks: Woodlands Park in River Place

Written by Emily O'Shaughnessy | July 24, 2014

Woodlands Park River Place

Woodlands Park in River Place is a beautiful park, but it’s not one that most of us would stumble upon if we weren’t looking for it. Which is, of course, part of the charm. Located at the very end of Big View Drive, River Place residents know and proudly claim this great park. But for others in the Lake Travis area that have never been, it’s definitely worth the windy, scenic drive to get there.

Emma Long Metropolitan Park: Summer Fun on Lake Austin

Written by Emily O'Shaughnessy | July 16, 2014

Emma Long Metropolitan Park is located on Lake Austin, right off 2222 (about a 10 minute drive down City Park Road). It’s one of the largest parks in Austin, complete with a boat dock, camping facilities, swimming areas, sand volleyball courts and more.

Turkey Creek trail, which offers 2.5 miles of shaded, scenic hiking, is nearby and a perfect spot to let your dog run and splash in the water. It’s an off-leash area, and a mini paradise for dogs that love to explore. They’ll be in heaven.

But of course Emma Long is a great place for humans, too. It’s inexpensive, especially if you can make it there during the week when it’s less crowded and admission is only $5 per car. Admission is $10 per car Friday through Sunday, but even that is a good deal for all the park has to offer.

Children’s Day Art Park: Fifty Cents for a Morning of Fun!

Written by Emily O'Shaughnessy | July 8, 2014

We’re well into summer, and if you’re looking for something different to do with the kids but the wallet hasn’t recovered from that Disney vacation you’re in luck.

This week Children’s Day Art Park returns to Symphony Square Amphitheater after a couple weeks off. It runs most Wednesday mornings in the summer from 9:30 to 11:30am. Each week there’s a different theme with unique performers on stage — everything from puppet shows, musicians, local artists and even a Teddy Bear picnic.

The gates open at 9:00am, and — get this — the cost is 50¢ per child, while adults get in free with paid child admission. I love that reversal. Let your kids treat you for once! The amount is just right. Fifty cents isn’t going to break the bank, but it’s enough for a child handing over two quarters from her piggy bank to appreciate the fact that she paid to see a live performance.
