You never know when you’re going to be out on the road and get “the hanger.”
You know the feeling. The result of waiting so long to eat and you’re so hungry that you’ve moved past mere frustration and now you’re actually angry.
When that sensation hits, it’s best to get food pronto, which is how I first came across Angel’s Icehouse in Spicewood.
I was on my way back from Krause Springs when I saw the first sign of the famous Lake Travis area restaurant. Bikers had begun a formation in front as I found my way inside the property, hungry and ready for whatever foods they had to offer.
But what I found inside was not some mere roadside attraction. Instead I was greeted with some of the friendliest Texas service in the Hill Country. And plenty of delicious food options for a car full of hungry Lake Travisites.
At home in the Hill Country
One of the best parts about a trip to Angel’s is just how welcome you feel the moment you walk in.
But this roadhouse, which opens up to an outdoor patio complete with a private dog park out back, is more than just a restaurant. It’s a place you’ll want to park and stay a little, whether it’s to stretch the legs after a long road trip or watch the latest UT football game.
Spicewood is a great home for the famous eatery, and located off Highway 71, you’ll be able to hop off and get your fill without having to drive too far off the beaten path.
Shaded by decades-old Live Oak trees, you’ll be able to enjoy some of the Lake Travis area’s best roadside fare outside on their back patio, drink in hand.
Plenty of choices line the taps at the bar, and make for a very local selection of brews to cool you down a bit.
Weekends and in the summer you can expect to find live bands playing on their outdoor stage, which is a great reason to stay and make an evening out of the trip.
Kids will be happy to find plenty of room to play out back, and there’s even an outdoor play area for the little ones.
Make yourself at home and take a load off for a while. The atmosphere is great, the food is tasty — you’re truly in Texas heaven.
Texas fried goodness
If you’re wondering what’s on the menu at Angel’s, think fried Texas favorites like chicken fried steak, chicken fried chicken and beer-battered tilapia. You can also find burgers, sandwiches, hot dogs and salads … so there seems to be a little something for even the pickiest eater.
On my latest trip out to the Lake Travis area eatery, I didn’t wait long to order the item I had been smelling since I walked in — their famous Angus beef chicken fried steak. Breaking about a million of my New Years resolutions was worth it, and I walked away a satisfied customer once again.
Angel’s is a place where you’re treated like family, and I know it won’t be long before I find myself hunting down their chicken-fried goodness again.
