Exotic Resort Zoo: Take a Guided Safari Tour in Texas

Written by Emily O'Shaughnessy | March 22, 2016

Exotic Resort Zoo

Load up the family and take a mini road trip to the Exotic Resort Zoo in Johnson City. It’s about an hour out of town — depending on where you live in the Lake Travis area — but truly a world away.

The Exotic Resort Zoo is located on 137 acres with over 500 animals and 80 different species. The highlight is the guided safari tour, where you ride around the property in a large open but covered trailer. You can buy buckets of feed at the gift shop, which I highly recommend (they are large enough to share).

The tour takes about 45 minutes, and our guide did a wonderful job of telling us about the animals as we meandered through the grounds.

Easter Brunch 2016: Lake Travis and Beyond

Written by Mandy Spivey | March 21, 2016

Easter is one special time of the year.

Depending on your particular family festivities, your day might involve some or all aspects of the following:

  • Going to church
  • Looking for Easter bunnies
  • Egg hunts around the house
  • Consuming way too many sugary Peeps
  • A feast of chocolate Easter bunnies
  • Wearing all of the pastels in the house
  • A ginormous brunch or lunch

Somehow, whether I am home with family for Easter Sunday, or if I’m just hanging around at my house on March 27th this year, I know one thing is for sure. I’m going to be in that line for brunch come lunch time, which is why I jumped at the opportunity to compile this year’s list of places to go for Easter brunch.

From tacos to BBQ, from sandwiches to brunch buffets — Lake Travis has quite the selection of food options to satisfy even the hungriest Easter eaters. And since the area has been growing so much lately, we have a few new restaurants for you to try out. Don’t be afraid to get adventurous with your taste buds this year.

Lost in Spicewood, Found across Lake Travis in Lago Vista: The Story of Lisha

Written by Sandra Spicher | March 10, 2016

LeonardsAndLisha

Spicewood residents David and Beverly Leonard were walking Lisha, their rescued Black Mouth Cur mix, when she bolted into the brush after a deer. Four-year-old Lisha didn’t come back right away, so the Leonards took action.

They made flyers and put them up all over the neighborhood and at local businesses like Lee’s Almost By the Lake. Over the next few days they probably logged “about a thousand miles,” Beverly says, searching on foot and on the road — desperate to find the youngest member of their family.

Oasthouse Gastropub: Not Your Ordinary Pub Food

Written by Elaine Heng | March 9, 2016

With the openings of all the new restaurants in the Lake Travis area, Oasthouse Gastropub will have a good chance of making it on your list as one of the newest local favorites.

Oasthouse Gastropub serves up locally sourced, melt-in-your-mouth, upscale pub food. As soon as you walk up to the joint, you’ll be greeted by warm smiles and clean cut staff members.

The aesthetic details of the restaurant are designed tastefully chic — welcoming, cozy, and elegant. You will take notice of the re-purposed wood tables and Edison light bulbs floating above the dining floor. The view through a wall of glass allows you to see all of the action taking place in the kitchen.

Strawberry Picking at Sweet Berry Farm

Written by Emily O'Shaughnessy | March 8, 2016

Sweet Berry Farms

Sweet Berry Farm in Marble Falls is a favorite local excursion. My family loves to go in the fall for the pumpkin patch and the gorgeous flowers, but we had never made it in the spring to pick the berries.

That seemed wrong, considering it is called “Sweet Berry” after all. So when I heard that the strawberries were ripe and ready for pickin’ we loaded up the kids and headed that way.

My kids love strawberries and also love to pick things growing in the ground (more than once we’ve had to apologize over a picked flower from a well-manicured garden). So I knew they’d be thrilled when they were not only allowed to, but encouraged to pick something! I was right. They were in heaven!
