Shopping Local in Lake Travis

It can start right after you clean the Thanksgiving dishes. Christmas shopping!

The stores try to suck you into the shopping frenzy with deals on Black Friday. From now until Christmas you’ll be bombarded with advertising to remind you how many days you have left to shop.

And it’s easy to sit in the comfort of your home and go shopping. You can find almost everything you need and have it delivered to your door. A membership to Amazon Prime will have selected items delivered to you in a day!

But what if you’re looking from something more unique? Something that you can’t find online. And a gift that supports Live Local in Lake Travis.

From the Vineyard to the Glass at Flat Creek Estate in Marble Falls

Written by Sandra Spicher | November 24, 2015

Entrance to Flat Creek Estate

In the middle of 2011’s grape harvest, Flat Creek Estate lost its winemaker to a rival in California. Desperate to save the vintage, owners Rick and Madelyn Naber asked Tim Drake, then an itinerant wine scientist running Texas Wine Lab, for help. The Nabers’ goal had always been to make world-class wines. Once they settled on wine as the product, anyway. They bought what was known as Flat Creek Farm on East Singleton Bend Road to save the agricultural land from development in 1999.

However, not many places can claim to have served multiple generations a tuna salad on white.

ThunderCloud Subs is an iconic sandwich shop with three locations in the Lake Travis area at Four Points, Lakeway, and Bee Cave. They are celebrating two big milestones this year — 40 years of making sandwiches and 25 years of Turkey Trot’s. The Turkey Trot is an Austin Thanksgiving Day tradition that has raised over $2.5 million to help support Caritas of Austin.

We caught up with Mike Haggerty, co-owner of ThunderCloud Subs and run director of the ThunderCloud Subs Turkey Trot, and asked him a few questions about the journey to sandwich fame.
