Crystal Creek Moonshine in Spicewood: Not Your Grandpa's Moonshine

Written by Mandy Spivey | April 15, 2015

A few moonshine staples at Crystal Creek

There are a lot of misconceptions out there about the distilled drink, moonshine. I, for one, thought most of it is made in bath tubs (not true … these days that is). If you avoid drinking it for fear of going blind — that would be a more popular anecdote for the drink, too. But a lot has changed in the moonshine distillation game in the last few years.

Essentially moonshine is high-proof spirits that are made at home in small quantities — sometimes illicitly. In the past and in the early 1800s many farmers made their living distilling moonshine or “white whiskey” in the Appalachian area. Corn farmers could turn their crop into a more valuable item, and cut down on shipping costs in the process. But a lot of fermenting and early distilling was done under the cover of darkness to keep their operations secret.

The Lexus of Lakeway Dealership has Arrived

Written by Cathy Hale | April 14, 2015

Lexus of Lakeway

If you’ve driven towards Lakeway on RR 620 lately and stopped at the light at Kollmeyer Drive, you may have noticed a huge structure taking shape beyond the hillside on your right. Is it a shopping mall? A museum? Nope, that’s the new Lexus of Lakeway dealership.

This 80,000-square-foot facility, which is sitting on about 39 acres, is slated to open in July 2015. While it has the capacity to house about 600 cars, it will typically have 300 cars on-site for the first few years. Two hundred of the 300 vehicles will be new cars representing all nine Lexus models with all color options. Fifty to 100 cars will be used for customer service, so customers can drive one while their car is being serviced.

I had the opportunity to speak with Steven Walker, General Manager at Lexus of Austin about the new dealership. As a Lakeway resident myself since 2007, I’ve seen the project unfold and I’ve certainly heard the dealership debates over the years. But instead of revisiting the history, I was eager to hear Steven’s perspective about the future.

Why does Lexus want to be in Lakeway?

What are you really doing to customize your facility to suit the Lake Travis area?

And let’s be honest, why should we want you here?

LTL Weekend April 10

With so much going on this weekend, it’s going to be hard to choose what to do.

Close to home we have the First Annual Mighty Kite Flight at Bee Cave Central Park on Sunday. It’s the time of year for a pic in the bluebonnets — take a drive around town and out to the Hill Country to enjoy the peak of wildflower season. It’s also a great time of year for berry picking at Sweet Berry Farm.

Visit the big city for the 5th Annual Family Water Festival or take your place in the largest 10K race in Texas at the Statesman Cap10K on Sunday morning. Another race taking place this weekend is the 5th Annual Run to the Sun Relay beginning at Enchanted Rock State Park and finishing at Camp Mabry.

Check out the LT Lifestyle weekend roundup for more events and local live music. Enjoy your weekend in and around the Lake Travis area!

Exploring Lake Travis & Lake Austin: Paddle Power

Written by Mandy Spivey | April 9, 2015

SUP on Lake Travis

When you head out for a day on Lake Travis or Lake Austin, you really have your pick of what to do.

A lot of Austinites first explore Lake Travis’ waters with a powerboat, which is a perfect way to take in the large serpentine-like reservoir any time of the year. However, some of the best ways to enjoy the finer details and coves of Lake Travis come by way of kayaks and stand up paddle boards — or SUP’s.

Modern day kayaks and stand up paddle boards are spacious and some are even pet-friendly, so if you have a swimming buddy make sure you bring them for a day out on the lake.
