6 Reasons Why You Can Eat More Ice Cream

Written by Emily O'Shaughnessy | January 17, 2014

Cups & Cones in Steiner Ranch

“Can we go to Cups & Cones?” I hear this phrase at least three times a week, and often times I give in. Truth is, I enjoy going almost as much as my kids. They love the ice cream, but even to them it’s not just about the sweet treats. It’s a social place, a community gathering spot that welcomes everyone.

There’s a lot to love about Cups & Cones, and you don’t have to eat ice cream every time you visit—but you can. Here are 6 reasons why you can eat more ice cream (or other yummy treats) and know that you’ll be supporting one of our favorite local businesses in the Lake Travis area.

Dell Children's Storybook Gala: Raising Funds and Hope for Texas Children

Written by Mandy Spivey | January 16, 2014

Dell Children's Medical Center of Central Texas

Dell Children’s Medical Center of Central Texas is gearing up for their annual Dell Children’s Gala, Storybook, Saturday January 25th at Austin Convention Center’s Grand Ballroom. Hosted by Laura and Tommy Craddick, Jr., this is the first fundraising occasion of the year for Dell Children’s Medical Center, which in past years have raised more than $1 million to support and maintain its kid-centric atmosphere.

This year’s gala will follow in the theme of child-like whimsy. “Storybook” is a homage to all of the stories and lives the medical center has touched throughout its years of being the premier medical center of Central Texas. Over the years, more than 140,000 injured and sick children have been served by DCMC, and it is fundraisers such as these that give them the chance to touch so many lives.

The Hills are Alive with Cedar Pollen: Allergy Season in Austin

Cedar Trees - Austin Allergies

Sitting in church yesterday I looked around and noticed a third of the congregation rubbing their eyes and sniffling. Sure, the singing was powerful and obviously spoke to many, but frankly I was surprised that it had everyone that emotional. Did I miss something?

Then it dawned on me. It wasn’t the service that had everyone tearing up. It’s cedar fever season in Austin. Ah, yep. That explains it.

Allergies.

Either you’re in the club or you’re not. Some suffer like crazy this time of year while others go about their daily business with no problems. It hardly seems fair. The cedar fever club is one you really don’t want a membership in, though on the bright side once you’re inducted you have plenty of company.

Lakeway's Big Band Bash

Break out your good dancing shoes! This Monday January 13th was the the City of Lakeway’s first Big Band Bash of the year, and it was a packed house. Locals bee-lined to Lakeway Activity Center for the free dance and big brass tunes. Led by the talented and entertaining Lisa Clark and David Cummings, the Republic of Texas Big Band wowed crowds with their renditions of classics such as Georgia On My Mind, I Get a Kick Out of You, and more waltzes than you can handle.

The impressive 17-piece band, which has changed leadership and members throughout the years, is now comprised of 4 saxophones, 4 trombones, 5 trumpets, a guitar, piano, bass and drums. Singers Lisa Clark and David Cummings fill in for the vocals, and the rest is just details.

Lonestar Soccer

Submitted for our Just For Kids section by 7 year old Lake Travis area local, Tanner Hower.

Oh hello, I’m Tanner. Today I’m writing about Lonestar Soccer Club. It’s a great soccer club to go to when you move up from Neighborhood Sports. When your 10 or older you go to Select. Any age younger, you go to Acedamey.

The diffrence between Neighborhood Sports and Lonestar is Lonestar is 7 or older all boys or all girls. Neighborhood is any age all boys or girls. Another diffrence is Neighborhood has 3 players at a time. Lonestar has 6 and 9 players. The third diffrence is Neighborhood is no golies. Lonestar there are golies.
