Written by Todd Hower | December 31, 2013

Health Fitness Apps

Will your New Year’s resolution for 2014 be to lose weight and get in shape? You won’t be alone. Losing weight and getting in shape are the top New Year’s resolutions year after year. We all know that it’s a lot easier to consume 1000 calories than it is to burn them. Trying to eat right after the holiday season and kick off a new exercise routine in January is never fun—especially if you live in a cold climate!

Fortunately for us locals here in the Lake Travis area, the weather is mild enough to get out and stay active throughout most of the year. And your smartphone might be the perfect tool to get you up and running for an indoor workout on those cold or raining days.

Today’s fitness apps can make it easier for anyone who wants to eat right and stay in shape. From weekend warriors to serious athletes and everyone in between. Sometimes being able to track things like your goals, routines, calories, and routes are just the motivation you’ll need to keep exercise fun and coming back for more.

Here are 5 fitness apps to keep you motivated, and help you track and celebrate your fitness successes in 2014!

The Candy Jar: Satisfy Your Sweet Tooth

Written by Emily O'Shaughnessy | December 30, 2013

The Candy Jar

Christmas is over, but if visions of sugarplums still dance in your head it may be time to visit The Candy Jar in the Hill Country Galleria. With over 800 different varieties of candy you’ll feel like a kid in a candy store. Oh, wait…

The store, which opened in October, is a wonderful addition to the Lake Travis area. When I first walked through the door I felt like Charlie must have felt when he entered the Chocolate Factory — amazed and delighted with the desire to sample every single item in sight.

There’s every color in the rainbow, in any form you can think of — taffy, jelly beans, truffles, gummies, lollipops, nostalgic candy, seasonal treats and more. On top of being visually stunning, the place smells (and tastes!) delicious.

Shopping on Main St.

Christmas is a special time of the year. The time when gorging on Santa themed sugar cookies isn’t cause for alarm and a family intervention. A month-long celebration of holiday traditions, mugs of hot cocoa, family get-togethers and unlimited shopping sessions.

But when you want to get back to basics and get into the true spirit of Christmas, just get into your car! Living in the Lake Travis area is such a great reason to take a day trip out to one of the many colorful towns surrounding us, and what a better place to visit than Fredericksburg, Texas?

Lake Travis Area Excursion: Johnson City and Pecan Street Brewing

Written by Mandy Spivey | December 20, 2013

Pecan Street Brewing

Take a drive down scenic Highway 290 in the Hill Country. Forty-five miles west of Austin is the small town of Johnson City. The entire city sits on less than 1.5 square miles of land. In spite of this, the town carries with it a huge legacy; the city is the birthplace of President Lyndon Baines Johnson.

And there are big things brewing in Johnson City these days. Pecan Street Brewing, located in the heart of Johnson City’s town square across the street from the courthouse, is one of the newest business endeavors from Tim and Patti Elliot. The two originally met back in Austin while working at the Armadillo World Headquarters—she worked as a barmaid and he had the job as club handyman.

The famous institution, known for hosting the likes of Stevie Ray Vaughan, Bruce Springsteen, the Pointer Sisters and members of the Grateful Dead, was an Austin staple in the burgeoning 1970s music scene. At a time when the music genres of country, urban blues, and jazz coexisted together in the downtown scene, the AWH sought to bring these differing groups together under one roof.

Lake Travis Area Neighborhood Guide: Rough Hollow Lakeway

Written by Todd Hower | December 19, 2013

Nestled in the warm coves of Lake Travis sits one of Lakeway’s newest master-planned communities, Rough Hollow. This waterfront neighborhood which prides itself for embodying the “casual elegance” of lake life, is a perfect place to settle down and enjoy the Lake Travis Lifestyle.

History

The vision of Rough Hollow came from a local developer that knows the Lake Travis area well, Legend Communities. They have teamed up with Crescent Communities, which is based out of Charlotte, NC., to give residents a place where luxury meets adventure with a feel of “roughness” that the landscaping around the lake is known for.

Residents enjoy the breath-taking views of the Texas Hill Country while indulging their love of Lake Travis, the 65-mile reservoir that is the prize of the greater Austin area.
